2009 Fantasy Football rookie scouting report on Donald Brown – RB – Indianapolis Colts. Includes player profile, fantasy football outlook, keeper league incentives, draft rankings, and 2009 expectations and stat projections.
Player Profile – Donald Brown:
Born: April 11, 1987
Draft: 2009 – 1st Round (27th pick) Indianapolis Colts
Position: Running Back
Fantasy Football Outlook:
As somewhat of a surprise pick by the Colts in 2009 NFL Draft, Donald Brown enters a star studded Colts offense for the 2009 season. However with the injury prone Joseph Addai roaming the Colts backfield, Donald Brown enters the 2009 season as a huge sleeper/high reward running back for fantasy football teams in 2009.
Offering a top notch running back mentality as a workhorse RB, Donald Brown led the NCAA in rushing yards during the 2008 season with 2,083 rushing yards on 367 carries for a 5.7 yard average. Combine that with 18 rushing touchdowns and 21 receptions for 125 receiving yards, and Brown clearly could be a top flight fantasy football running back during the prime of his career. With the Colts known for drafting young running backs to take over for aging guys: (drafting Edgerrin James to back up Marshall Faulk, drafting Joseph Addai to back up Edgerrin James, and now drafting Donald Brown to back up Joseph Addai), it wouldn’t at all be surprising to see the Colts groom Donald Brown in 2009 for the full time starting RB job in 2010. During the prime of his career, Donald Brown could amass a season of 1,300 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
Keeper League Incentive:
In fantasy football keeper leagues, Donald Brown is an excellent mid to early-late round running back choice. With the starting RB job in Indianapolis seemingly his for the 2010 season, Brown’s keeper league value will have more worth in the long term rather than the short term in 2009. However if Joseph Addai cannot regain his pre-injury form early in the 2009 season, Donald Brown could very easily take over the starting RB job by week 4 and make a case for rookie of the year honors. Entering the 2009 season, Donald Brown is worthy of being ranked as a top 25 overall keeper league running back option.
With Joseph Addai still lingering around in the Colts backfield, Donald Brown should be in a full blown running back by committee approach during his rookie year. However that is assuming Addai does not get re-injured, as well assuming that he can bounce back fully from his offseason knee procedure. Either way you look at it, Donald Brown is a huge sleeper and high reward running back option for fantasy football teams in 2009.
2009 Stat Projections:
Low End: 400-700 rushing yards, 100 receiving yards, 2-4 touchdowns
High End: 800-1,100 rushing yards, 100-200 receiving yards, 4-8 touchdowns
2009 Fantasy Football Draft Ranking:
Entering the 2009 season, Donald Brown is worthy of being ranked as a top 40 overall fantasy football running back in traditional one year re-draft leagues.
In fantasy football keeper league, Donald Brown should be ranked as a top 25 overall fantasy football running back.
