2009 San Francisco 49ers OverviewBy: Warren Jones
Can Mike Singletary have success in his first season? How will the 49ers play under this hall of fame player? ? Singletary after taking over for Mile Nolan won four of the last five games and seems to have control over a franchise that was going absolutely nowhere. Can he provide the players with a winning attitude and make them reach the potential that they have? Will Michael Crabtree play this year or sit out the entire year over a contract dispute?
Jimmy Raye is in as offensive coordinator and Mike Martz is out. The good news is that it will be lots of running and not as much passing. The San Francisco 49ers will grind it out and burn clock by attempting to have long drives that will consume the clock. This could be beneficial for the San Francisco 49ers if they are able to establish a pounding running game and utilize Frank Gore and Vernon Davis effectively. Greg Manusky returns to run the defense and will implement a straight forward 3-4. No more of the complex defenses that Mike Nolan attempted to run without having much success. A simplified defense will benefit the San Francisco 49ers because the more basic for them the more results that they will get. Mike Singletary will really help out the f defensive side of the ball with help them being more aggressive.
Michael Crabtree the # 10 pick from Texas Tech has yet to sign and has missed training camp. It seems that the two sides are extremely way off and the San Francisco 49ers should stick to the guns that they have. He wants to have a contract similar to that the Oakland Raiders paid to Darrius Heyward Bey 23.5 million guaranteed. If the San Francisco 49ers stick to what they should pay him it will save the organization in the long run. I really appreciate what the San Francisco 49ers organization are doing in this negotiating because they should not over pay for him.
With Mike Singletary as coach the San Francisco 49ers are one of my sleepers of 2009. They will play with intensity and be in most games. It’s no coincidence that San Francisco responded in a positive way to the midseason coaching change of a year ago. It could have been due to the change in philosophy that was desperately needed. Even though they have strengthened some areas of weakness, they still have yet to settle on a quarterback and prove they can generate a consistent pass rush over a full 16 game schedule. Overall 9-7 will be the record for the San Francisco 49ers this year.
