Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after the 2016 Olympics announcement was made by the IOC. The 2016 Olympics announcement is going to leave quite a few people in the Chicago area disappointed, because they had been trying for several years to try and get the IOC vote to sway in their direction. Now the parties are going to be prevalent in Rio de Janeiro after they turned out to be the victors in the 2016 Olympics announcement. It would have been really cool to have the Olympics back in the United States for the 2016 Olympic Games, but in the end, Rio de Janeiro is probably going to throw a great opening ceremonies to the 2016 Games.
The excitement about the 2016 Olympics announcement had been filled to the brim in Chicago, as parties were taking place all over town where people could go and watch the ICO announcement being made live on television. It didn’t turn out the way that many Chicago residents had hoped though, and the 2016 Olympics announcement is definitely going to be upsetting news to businesses in the area that were hoping that 2016 could potentially be a big cash cow for tourism. Such is life when you are bidding for such a huge World event though, and the ICO probably put a lot of thought into which country could host the best Olympics.
It’s hard not to think that maybe some of the gang violence that was taking place in Chicago recently might have come into the minds of some of the IOC voters. People won’t want to talk about it, but it is a reality that if Chicago isn’t able to control some of the gang violence that is taking place there, why would an IOC voting member think that it would be a safe place to host the 2016 Olympic Games? It also may not have even been on their minds, as the decision was much bigger than a singular incident, and no country is perfectly safe for everyone at this point. Still, it would have been better if the incident didn’t take place, and it could have helped Chicago to show that they have full control of their city.
There were a total of four cities that were trying to become the 2016 Olympics host city, and those cities were Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid. They all could have been great places to host the Olympics, but it just would have been really interesting to have the Olympics back in the United States. It’s not the end of the world though, as Canada is hosting the 2010 Olympics, allowing people from the U.S. to go attend if they want to be involved with the games. With Chicago out of the running to host the games, its time to move on and become excited about the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
