43rd Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards (2009): Nominations and Winners List

by sawpan

The 43rd Annual Country Music Awards (2009) — the CMAs — will be held Wednesday, November 11. The ceremony will be hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, both of whom are nominated for Vocalist of the Year in their respective gender categories. The two will also perform in a free concert prior to the CMAs. Live from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee, the show will air at 8 p.m. EST.

Brad Paisley leads all nominees with seven CMA nods, including Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist, and Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Song of the Year (goes to songwriter), Video, and Musical Event of the Year (with Keith Urban).

Keith Urban, along with Taylor Swift, Jamey Johnson, Zac Brown (of the Zac Brow Band), and George Strait are nominated for four Country Music Awards each.

George Strait’s four nominations ties him with Alan Jackson for the most career nominations: 79. Thus far, though, George Strait has taken home the most CMAs: 22.

Reba McEntire holds the record for female country entertainers, having been nominated 48 times, including her two 2009 nominations.

Rascal Flatts is nominated for the Country Music Awards Vocal Group of the Year, an award they’ve won six years in a row. But they’re up against the legendary Eagles and the acclaimed Zac Brown Band, not to mention Lady Antebellum and Little Big Town, so winning isn’t a foregone conclusion.

New Artist of the Year (formerly the Horizon Award) nominees are Randy Houser, Jamey Johnson, Jake Owen, Darius Rucker, and the Zac Brown Band.

Of special note is the appearance of Jack White of the White Stripes and his side project band The Raconteurs, who garnered a nomination for Musical Event of the Year. White produced Loretta Lynn’s critically acclaimed comeback album “Van Lear Rose.” The Raconteurs entry, “Old Enough,” partners up Jack White with Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe.
