Thanks to intensive marketing on the part of some major yogurt brands, it is now common knowledge that the live cultures in yogurt are good for and will help regulate your digestive system. But what about those who are lactose intolerant or have dairy allergies? And what about the vegan community, who also require non-dairy products? Luckily, in this age of new and innovative alternatives for those with food allergies, there are some wonderful dairy free yogurt options available!
Ricera was one of the first non-dairy yogurts on the market. Made from rice milk, this creamy treat has one and a half servings of whole grain rice in each cup. It is not only dairy free, but also has no soy, wheat, or casein either, making it an ideal snack for those with many food allergies. It is made with natural, organic ingredients, contains 3 grams of protein per serving, and is vegan friendly as well.
For those who prefer soy based products to rice based products, Whole Soy & Co. makes one of many brands of soy milk yogurt available. It is available in many flavors (I bet the Apricot Mango is incredible!), and the plain and vanilla varieties are even available in both a single-serving size as well as a larger, multi-serving tub. These larger size tubs are common with milk-based yogurts, but are more difficult to find in their non-dairy counterparts!
One of the creamiest soy yogurts I’ve tried is the variety made by WildWood Organics. It’s more difficult to find than some other brands, but the flavors are delicious and the texture is incredible, far less runny or gloppy than any other I’ve seen.
Turtle Mountain manufactures a selection of dairy free yogurts called So Delicious. These yogurts are made with all natural ingredients, including organic soy milk. It is available in blueberry, peach, raspberry, vanilla, and a more non-traditional offering, cinnamon bun. So Delicious dairy free yogurt is certified vegan and contains no trans fat, no cholesterol, and lots of vitamin B12 from vegetarian sources. Additionally, it is formulated with additional ingredients that help ensure your body absorbs the maximum amount of calcium possible.
For those with a soy allergy, Turtle Mountain also makes a coconut milk yogurt that is absolutely incredible! It is dairy, soy, and gluten free, making it an ideal choice for people with a variety of food allergies. It is available in even more yummy flavors than its soy counterpart, including such exotic blends as Passionate Mango and Pina Colada. This coconut milk variety of yogurt, unlike most soy yogurts, has a taste more similar to traditional yogurt. And kids love it! My son has a variety of food allergies and he simply adores this yogurt, always begging for me to buy him some, giving it his picky-eater kid stamp of approval.
Be aware that some non-dairy yogurt brands are manufactured in the same factories as dairy-based products, so make sure you check the label to be sure there aren’t potentially traces of dairy contained in the product. This is especially important if you are very sensitive to or have severe allergies to dairy!
