As night falls the sound of snoring should follow. This is not always the case in some families that have restless children. Getting your child to bed can be just as bad as getting your child to fall asleep at night. These tips are meant to help aid you in getting your child to fall asleep as well as aiding you in getting your child to sleep through the night.
The most important thing is to decide where your child is going to sleep. Making sure your child is sleeping in a comfortable environment will assist you in getting your child to go to bed. Some of the biggest issues most parents have with this is their children wanting to be by their parents. If this is the case than you should try sleeping in your child’s room with them. If they are afraid of the dark than you should keep a nightlight or lamp on for them at night.
This leads into the second most important tip and that is making sure your child is comfortable. Make sure they are well fed, bathed, and relaxed before trying to get your baby to sleep. If your child has a dirty bottom you will find it hard to get them to sleep. The same goes if your child is hungry.
Usually if your child is tired their will be signs. Watch for these signs like eye rubbing or yawning. This is the biggest tip for any parent because knowing what your child does prior to falling asleep will be a big help for you in getting them to bed. Having a routine will help you in the long run in assuring your child goes to bed.
Some noise is also acceptable in getting your child to sleep. Sounds from the TV, dishwasher, or even the washer can help comfort your child. These are all sounds your child hears on a day to day basis and is actually a comfort for him or her.
Another important tip is remember not to force the issue. By placing your child in the bed and leaving him or her there to care you are causing your child to fear going to bed. If you child is upset remove him or her from the bed. While calming him down you can walk with him or her, read a story, or just hold your baby until they have settled down enough to fall back asleep. One thing you should not do is take your child out of his or her room. A lot of parents will take them for a car ride to help them get to sleep. This is a big no-no. When rocking your toddler to sleep or going for a car ride you are teaching your child that this is how you should fall asleep when what you want them to do is learn how to fall asleep in their own bed.
Remember, having a routine for your child will help you in getting your child to bed. Routines should and can include things like taking a bath, than crawling into bed to hear a story at the same time every night. The important thing is having your child fall asleep in his or her own bed while remembering to keep them as comfortable as possible.
