Unless you have been living in a coffin for the past year or so, you will note the extreme popularity of vampires in popular culture. With the Twilight movies, The Vampire Diaries, and my own personal favorite, True Blood on HBO being massive hits, it’s no small wonder the world has been ‘bitten’ by the vampire frenzy. With Halloween fast approaching, we will certainly see a vamp or two, or more, in costume, and while the King of Vampires himself, Dracula, is always a favorite every season, I thought it would be fun to throw a few modern day bloodsuckers into the mix as well. By that, I mean the vampires from the TV series True Blood!
True Blood has certainly caused a surreal sensation over the past summer. The series, which takes place in the South, in particular Louisiana, centers around the supernatural universe which surrounds telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse. On the show, vampires have literally ‘Come out of the Coffin’ so to speak after the Japanese invent synthetic blood, which vampires can live off of without having to prey on humans. Well as it turns out, quite a few extraordinary vampires and vampiresses make their presence known to humankind in the True Blood universe, and I will give you a rundown on the fabulous undead who would make awesome costumes for Halloween this year.
For the Women
Alright, ladies, this is truly your chance to REALLY vamp it up this year, and I mean that quite literally! True Blood has some very fun, sexy ladies to take cues from, but I am going to start out with perhaps THE vampiest of them all (and my choice of costume this year), vampire queen Sophie-Ann! Making a very memorable debut in the latest episode ‘Frenzy’, Sophie-Ann is a 1100+ year old vixen, with gorgeous red hair and the looks of a classic Hollywood starlet. For this costume, I would definitely go with a gold sequined evening gown and accessorize it with flashy costume jewelry. Most thrift stores and vintage shops carry old prom dresses and you can find all sorts of costume jewelry at a store such as Claire’s. Be sure to style your hair in a 1940s coif ala Rita Hayworth and paint your nails a pretty cherry red. Make sure your make-up is extra pale, with lovely eyes and bright red lipstick (again: 1940s Hollywood starlet). Although you don’t look a day over 25, be sure to carry yourself in a grand, regal way befitting a queen with a millennium of ‘life’ experience under your crown. You have seen the world change in the worst ways, and you must convey all of your wisdom behind your fresh faced looks.
Another very beautiful (and very dangerous) vampire is Lorena. Having found the perfect man in Bill Compton some 130+ years ago, she is a vamp who knows that she wants and will stop at nothing to get it. Literally! Lorena had quite a few costume changes this past season, as we saw her life with Bill unfold in the early 20th Century. For Lorena, I would go with the look she had back in the Roaring Twenties. Her outfit was a black flapper style evening gown that came to the top of the knees, trimmed with blood red, Art Deco style jewelry and long, black evening gloves. Most costume shops carry 1920s style flapper dresses, but again you could probably find something with that look at a thrift store or an antique store, along with the jewelry. Lorena had her hair cut in a very stylish bob back in this era, and again (and I REALLY stress this if you are planning to dress up as any of these vamps) make sure your complexion is EXTRA pale! Remember, you haven’t seen the sunlight in centuries, therefore you cannot have a sunny, California girl tan. So powder up, apply the eye make-up extra dark, and apply that blood red lipstick!
Now, if these ancient, world-weary vampiresses aren’t exactly your cup of tea, then I would most definitely go with dressing up as the young, doll-like Jessica. Made into an eternal teenager by Vampire Bill, Jessica is as fresh as they come. With her sweet, pretty face and gothic doll looks, I would go with a sweet sundress with flats. Any clothing store around this time of year will probably have sundresses on clearance, so you would certainly be able to pick one up for very cheap and I would go with a yellow one (like the one we saw her wear in the infamous episode where she ‘came out’ to her family as a newly recruited member of the undead). Jessica has very long, orange hair, usually pulled back into a ponytail (a hair extension would be really great to use for this) and I would keep the make-up very simple, with minimal eye make-up and glossy lips, certainly befitting for an eternal teenage girl. Oh, and yes, keep it pale!
Okay, while we are on a roll with the fun, sexy female vamps on the show that would make great costumes, we most certainly cannot leave out Vampire Pam! A popular fixture at Fangtasia, and Eric Northman’s strong, second in command, Pam is an eternal party girl to the nth degree. The best way I would describe her look would be Samantha from ‘Sex and the City’ meets Morticia Addams. When Pam is off-duty, we usually see her wearing fun, stylish ensemble with cute pumps (although one pair was sadly ruined when she went out into the woods one night), but when she is working, she dons the traditional ‘gothic’ look (all black, long flowing dresses, leather, etc.) so you could really go either way for Pam. Pam has been described as ‘Alice in Wonderland with fangs’ and a deadly soccer mom, and with her long blonde hair and simple, yet striking make-up that about sums it all up!
For the Men
Now, since I have given the ladies some fabulous costume ideas it’s time for me to give you gentlemen some tips as well! Now listen up guys, if you REALLY want attention from the ladies this Halloween, I would strongly advise taking a cue from the sexy, dangerous male vampires in the ‘True Blood’ universe. While most women would swoon anyway if you were wearing a long, black cape, dressing up as one of these hotties will make any girl want to become your personal Fangbanger!
If you want to go with the traditional ‘dark and brooding’ route, then Vampire Bill Compton is your man! Made into a vampire back in the Civil War by Lorena, he still sports the ancient sideburns which were THE look for the men of that time. However, for the 21st Century he has styled his dark black hair in an EMO style with bangs. Very nice indeed! Bill is almost always wearing a dark, charcoal grey long sleeved shirt, with black denim jeans. Bill’s look is very simple, but very sexy and effective! Now guys, I am going to give you the same make-up tip that I gave to the ladies and that is to be sure your complexion is extra pale. Most drugs stores around Halloween carry a special powder that you can use if you are going to dress up as a vampire, but be sure not to go CHALK white, as that would look comical. Just use a little powder to get that healthy, undead glow! As for Bill’s demeanor, remember, you were made a vampire against your will, when you were just a few miles from returning to your beloved wife and children. You have a lot of anger and torment inside of you, but you still contain a large dose of your former humanity.
Vampire Eric Northman. Just his name alone will make any red-blooded female go weak in the knees. Eric is a 1,000 year old Nordic vampire, and the owner of Fangtasia. A Viking in his human life, Eric is tough and sinister, although he has been known to show a very sly sense of humor. Eric in the first season of the show had long, golden blonde hair (which sadly was cut short this past season) but for his look, I would stick with the longer hair, as it is more romantic and Viking-like. Eric is usually always wearing head-to-toe black, although in one memorable episode we saw him wear a jogging suit (shudders) but I would go with the all black ensemble. If you wanted to take it a step further however, you could even don the Viking battle gear like we saw him wear in a flashback (I’ve seen Viking wear for sale at those costume shops that pop up in empty shopping centers every year around October). Either way you go, you will be irresistible to any breathing human creature!
If you want to go with a very unique vampire look this year, Eric’s maker, Godric, would be just the ticket. Although he has the looks of a high school sophomore, Godric is over 2,000 years old. It’s assumed the ancient teenager was turned sometime back in Roman times, and he sports some very elaborate, interesting body art. This one might be a little bit harder, as Godric’s most memorable look on the show was back in the Nordic times when he turned Eric, and we saw him shirtless displaying his extraordinary body art. My best bet for this one would to be to go online to www.true-blood.tv and check out their pix of Godric. Pick up one of those temporary body art henna kits (again you can usually find these at seasonal costume stores) and have a friend assist you. Although you have the look of an innocent schoolboy, you have seen civilizations rise and fall thru out your existence. Be sure you convey your knowledge and wisdom with a kind stoicism, fitting for a 2000 year old vampire.
OK, last, but DEFINATELY not least, we cannot forget the most crucial element to any of these aforementioned costumes: FANGS! You ARE a vampire and therefore you MUST have the most necessary item. A great place to order some really nice fangs is vampfangs.com. They sell a wide variety (including some that even drip blood) but I would go with the classic, plain fangs. Just don’t get TOO carried away with the spirit of your character and actually try to BITE someone ;)
I have given you all a small rundown on some of ‘True Blood’s most popular vampire characters. If you need any more assistance or visuals to go by, visit www.true-blood.tv or HBO’s official site to look at some pix of all the aforementioned vamps. It should also be noted, that on September 28th, you will be able to purchase a ‘genuine’ bottle of True Blood from HBO’s site, which would make a fantastic finishing touch to your costume! I hope everyone has a safe, and FANGTASTIC Halloween!
