The “breed profile” of a Cavachon is difficult because it’s not a breed. as with any cross breeders select with the hope of pulling the best from each parent breed, in this case the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise.
Ideally they will be 12-13 inches tall and mature to 10-20 pounds. There is a variety of colors including buff, peach, sable all with white, black and tan and tricolored. With pet breeds on both sides of the family tree they are naturally friendly dogs that need regular grooming if the coat is kept long.
With purebred dogs the advantage is a fairly predictable result. This predictable nature is reduced when breeds cross. I’ve seen a 35 pound dog bred to a 40 pound dog and the offspring was over 50 pounds when he matured! Equally with small dogs it’s tougher with crosses to guess the adult weight.
While many look to blame purebred breeders for ‘puppy mills’ these crossed designer dogs are a “puppy mill” dream. There are no registrations to worry about and, with that no traced pedigrees. Is the pup a product of siblings to tighten up genetics? Additionally they don’t need papers on the parents, which reduces cost and many of these small pet designer dogs are in much higher demand and higher cost than purebred dogs! Of course there are other breeders who do have reliable operations with an eye towards health.
That said, these typically are not dogs that need a great deal of exercise, and are low shedding. There are some now offering papers with the American Canine Hybrid Club.
Prices, although many breeders do not advertise, where they are listed are commonly $600-1,300. Purebred Bichons can be purchased for less than this while the prices are comparable to purebred Cavalier King Charles pups, without the purebred factor.
Many claim that crossbred dogs are healthier than purebreds and therefore worth the money, but this claim of health is not always true. The Bichon can have issues with Canine Ideopathic Thrombocytoenia, Von Willebrands disease, epilepsy, heart disease, Cushing’s, eye disease, liver shunts and Immune Mediated Hemlytic while Cavalier King Charles can also be affected by several eye diseases, heart disease and a progressive neurological disease called Syringomyelia. With some of these issues being genetic there is the chance the puppy will inherit none but there’s also a chance a puppy can inherit from both sides, in which health care can be very expensive.
Careful selection of the breeder and the individual puppy can mean a lifelong companion. Both of the parent breeds are pet dogs. Much as the border collie was developed to herd, the husky to pull sleds, the Bichon and Cavalier are companion dogs. Be realistic in your expectations and selection for a wonderful small dog.
