For one week in September New York’s Bryant Park comes alive with the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. This event features the best designers in the world, a few up and coming newcomers, and some aspiring designers that parade their Collections for Spring 2010. Every year this event is very anticipated not only be the celebrities who flock to the front row seats along the catwalk but also for the general public who enjoys seeing what the upcoming fashions will be.
This year five designers stood out with outstanding Collections. Here were my favorites.
1) Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2010 Collection.
This wonderful Spring Collection was more then just clothing that you watched paraded down the runway. It was a story. It was the plight of the American people through hard times and good times. It was an inspiration pure and simple. Mr Laurens theme to his Collection was the Dust Bowl era. His fashions kicked off the show with a strong show of denim. There were overalls, baggy denim pants, wonderful denim work coats, and simple button tops. But then the line progressed to clean crisp linen dresses that held the hint of a bygone era. Finally the grand finale of the show paraded suits and evening gowns to show America becoming more lucrative. This was a time line in fashion. It showed hard work and hard times in the denim, it reflected the building of the nation and a new beginning in the clean white linen and simple cotton print dresses, and then it morphed into a lucrative time when America had finally recovered from the Great Depression and was on top again. We could not help but compare the story of this piece of American history to today’s Recession and the hardships faced by the American people and the hope for tomorrow that we all hold.
The designs of this collection were amazing. I do not think there was one outfit that was not wearable. The laid back appeal of the denim, the soft femininity of the white linen and cotton print dresses, and the glorious glamor of the evening gowns were all amazing. This was truly my favorite collection for this Spring 2010 and it was also one of my favorite Collections of all time. I feel that it was a pure work of genius not only in the designs but also in the theme.
2) Michael Angel’s Spring 2010 Collection
Mr Angels designs were my second favorite for fashion week. He is a relatively new designer. This was only his second show at NYC Fashion Week but he outdid himself. His designs were sophisticated, edgy, extreme, and sexy.
The theme to his Collection seemed to be his vision for the future of the nation. He displayed this hope and its evolution in his fashions with the ability of a true genius. His bright and flamboyant colors reflected hope and recovery but here and there he placed pieces of black to also reflect his reservations about putting too much hope in a bright future next spring.
His skirts tended to be wonderfully high and sexy. They were each complimented with shirts that were equally daring. But despite all of this show of raw sexually he also gave his evening gowns pure sophistication and class. Many seemed to depict jewels in a bold statement that you can wear your jewelry in the fashion of print without spending a fortune on a diamond necklace. This was true inspiration.
Mr Angel has truly shown the world that he deserves to be shoulder to shoulder with some of the best designers in the world. He is one of the best talents I have seen in a very long time. His Spring 2010 Collection was amazing.
3) Narciso Rodriguez Spring 2010 Collection.
Narciso Rodriguez is one of the worlds best designers. Mercedes Benz nominated him Presents designer for this Fashion Week’s show. His talent is limitless and his designs are always amazing. His fan base includes Michelle Obama who proudly sported his design for her Election dress. He designed the late Carolyn Bassettes wedding dress to the late John Kennedy Jr. Sarah Jessica Parker also regularly wears his designs. Time Magazine even recognized him as one of the “25 Most Influential Hispanics In America”.
This Spring 2010 Collection tended to be neutral in colors. What made them stand apart was their shapes, designs, cuts, and simplicity. All of this worked together to give creations that were pure sophistication. Mr Rodriguez’s designs stood apart from other designers this Fashion Week. He is definitely one of my top five favorites.
4) Isaac Mizrahi Spring 2010 Collection
No one can deny that Isaac Mizrahi stole Fashion Week with his huge theatrical production. His Collection was more then just top designs, it was like watching a high budget movie. He had a staircase installed on the runway with a live Jazz band. There was even a wind machine. One of the models was chauffeured out onto the cat walk by a golf cart. But what truly stole the show as a rain shower on the catwalk. This was a work of art and genius. The entire presentation was done with taste and provided a bit of excitement for the audience.
Despite the whole theatrics his designs still stood out as outstanding. The pieces were unique and had an air of just being fun about them. His pantsuits were fantastic. They were business world and feminine sophistication all rolled into one. Many of his dresses sported skin tight bustier that offered sexuality with flaring skirts.
I enjoyed the show and I loved his designs.
5) Yigal Azrouel Spring 2010 Collection
I adore many of Yigal Azrouels’s designs. He seems to never disappoint and this Spring 2010 Collection was outstanding. It was innovative and new but I could also see his signature in each piece which I adore. His designs all combine sexuality and strength. He celebrates womanhood with these two things to wonderful limits.
He also offered male designs that were also wonderful. There were a lot of loose fitting cardigans which seemed to cry out for the arrival of spring.
His female clothing line leaned heavily on short dresses, shorts with sexy shirts, and a few bathing suits. However, there were also some wonderful evening gowns. The evening gowns offered sophistication and simplicity.
This year at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week there were many outstanding designers and a few that I did not care for but it was an exciting week of fashion that I greatly enjoyed.
