Adam Lambert’s AMA performance was highly anticipated, as Adam Lambert promised his AMA performance would be memorable. To close out the American Music Awards, Adam Lambert used his AMA performance to get lucky with a bunch of the male extras. Such a display is common for some famous female performers, but no one expected it from Adam Lambert, making his AMA performance almost too hot for TV.
Adam Lambert has a new album to promote, and a new single playing at the end of 2012. As if there aren’t enough reasons to talk about him, he gave fans one more with his AMA performance of “For Your Entertainment” Among other things, Lambert had leashes on two of his male backup dancers, kissed his male keyboard player, and had another male dancer put his face on his crotch.
The Adam Lambert AMA performance was so sexualized, it had to be censored when it aired on the West Coast. Nevertheless, the video spread so quickly, and opinions were so split, that most forgot how Lambert tripped over himself on the stage.
All of this came from a performer who said he didn’t want to “alienate” fans with his sexuality. Instead, the Adam Lambert AMA performance rubbed it in his fans’ face – and the faces of his dancers.
There have been countless award show performances that pushed the envelope with on-stage sexuality, of course. But since Lambert pushed the envelope of man-on-man sexuality, there is bound to be extra controversy and condemnation from some circles – which would help the routine live on even longer.
If Adam Lambert wanted to show a new side of him, then by that stands, his AMA performance was an unqualified success. Everything else about the routine is bound to be divisive, as his fans were likely bowled over, while those who mock and hate Lambert have endless new material.
Lambert already did the impossible at the AMAs, by overshadowing the likes of Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Michael Jackson. Swift’s latest award show domination meant nothing in the end, even as she got five AMAs. Jennifer Lopez fell over the stage during her performance of “Louboutins” but Lambert all but bailed her out. Rihanna had a brand new tattoo, while Michael Jackson got some posthumous awards, and Lady Gaga had her usual wild display.
Yet all of that was reduced to a warm up act, thanks to the Adam Lambert AMA performance. He clearly had to go all out to overshadow those performers, and he may have done it all too thoroughly for some to handle.
