The Asbury Park Press reported Sunday that a 23-year-old Daniel Bark was arrested that afternoon for the hit-and-run homicide of two-time American Idol contestant Alexis Cohen, who became famous for her post-audition rants and her flavorful comments directed at American Idol judge Simon Cowell. Daniel Bark was accused of causing the death of Alexis Cohen by driving recklessly and charged with second-degree manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. Police say that the Toms River, New Jersey, native was driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant when he hit Alexis Cohen early Saturday morning, leaving her for dead on the streets of Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
Although the exact time of the hit-and-run is still unknown, authorities were notified of the lifeless body of Alexis Cohen at 5:05 a.m. Saturday morning. Two passersby happened upon the 25-year-old’s body and called 911. Alexis Cohen was later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey.
Alexis Cohen was visiting Seaside Heights. It is unknown whether she was leaving her car or making her way back to it when she was struck. Her vehicle was found just a few hundred feet away from her body.
Alexis Cohen, who was also known as “Glitter Girl” (she wore plenty of glitter on her first audition for American Idol), became famous when she auditioned for the singing competition reality show American Idol in 2008. After listening to judges deny her access to the next round, suggesting that she might want to start a 60’s cover band a la Jefferson Airplane, she completely lost it after getting into the hallway, going on a rant that lasted for a considerably long time (even edited). Cursing and bird-shooting, the video of her rant went viral on YouTube.
She ranted and promised to become an actress.
But Alexis Cohen proved that adversity was just a spur to her thwarted dreams and returned to American Idol to audition for Season 8. Opting to not appear as the “Glitter Girl” from Season 7, she still got no further with the judges. But she didn’t wait to get beyond the double doors this time, firing off expletives and a double-barreled shot of birds at the judges table (no doubt meant in particular for Simon Cowell, who was her target of choice after the Season 7 audition).
That rant went viral as well. (Most videos of Alexis Cohen have been removed due to trademark infringement violations, but some can still be found.)
And she may have been working on being an actress, but Alexis Cohen had dreams of being a veterinarian as well and was enrolled in classes at Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania. She was from Allentown.
As for her rants, which she undoubtedly was more famous for than her song stylings that failed to impress the American Idol judges, they remain popular search topics. Her first rant has been a popularly viewed item on YouTube for over a year.
There is also a video that posted on the comedy website Funny Or Die about four months ago. Called the “Comedy Rant,” it is an attempt at a stand-up routine and is being falsely reported as being made and posted just a day or so before her death.
Daniel Bark is being held on a $35,000 bond. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.
