If there was ever a question as to if real hip hop still existed…you can be certain that you will find it with this man here. MedafORACLE is definitely in a class of his own…his talents and gift of words as an emcee is like none other…none at least that I have seen in a long time that is. I had the sincere pleasure of getting to know a bit more about medafORACLE and asked him some questions pertaining to his music, his growing career and his take on Arizona’s place in hip hop. One thing you will NOT find in this man is bullshit or sugarcoated opinions…he is definitely the real deal and one to look out for!!
SF: For those who are not familiar with your music, tell the readers about medafORACLE:
M. MedafORACLE is a man of God by day who’s married and works but by night and over all is a pure product of Hip Hop. I moved out here 6yrs ago from Northern VA in the DC area. Even tho I wasn’t creating music for the first year I was out here, I’ve actually been doing this Hip Hop shit for 18yrs…yes…18yrs. I started off writing poetry while watching my brother Kontoob do his thing on the local scene ending kid’s hopes and dreams in battles. Of course, being the younger brother I wanted to be just like him so I started writing rhymes on the low. I showed him a rhyme in 7th grade one day and he was like “yo, you a natural beast” from there he asked me to join a group him and his best friend LaVal Harris had called Poetic Ruffians. We started doing local shows and radio freestyle appearances. They called me “Disastrous” because I had a natural knack for battle rap. I’ve hurt feelings and ended a LOT of niggas hopes and dreams in this game. I finally then just grew up and got bored with battling so I changed my name to medafORACLE in 2000…the rest is history.
SF:What makes you and your music stand out compared to other artists?
M. Well first and foremost what makes me stand out is skills. There’s not a lot of niggas that can do what I do. I write, produce, mix and engineer my own shit. Most just rap. Second, I’m an emcee…I don’t “rap”. Most niggas just jot down some words on a beat that sounds cool to them and don’t say shit for four minutes straight. I don’t. I’m precise. I manipulate words; twist them around all while setting things straight in my life and maybe someone else’s. I bring a message and speak truth while managing to still make unique quality Hip Hop.
SF: Tell us about your latest album “Food, Rent, Water, or Gas”
M. “Food, Rent, Water or Gas” was released on June 6th, 2009 as a free download. It actually just started off as a single track. It was never intended to be a full album. My music has always been very personal and true so, what happen was, I lost my job and was getting evicted from my apartment. As a way to vent as I always do, I made a beat and wrote the song and created a monster. After that I decided to just do an album people could relate to which was real life. Every song on that album is literally a true story of mine or someone I know (mainly me). It was actually 2yrs old when I released it with the exception of two songs. After finishing the album, it just so happen that we entered a recession. Me being the type of person I am, I decided to release it as a free download. Let me explain the reason for that. I was thinking, how am I’m going to make a recession based album and then be like “yo go buy my shit” knowing America’s broke right now. What part of the game would that be? So I said fuck it, I’ma let everyone snatch it for free. So if you don’t got it, go get it at www.medaforacle.blogspot.com.
SF: What was your motivation for “Wake Up AZ?”
M. You mean other than the state itself and the quality of music that comes out of it? Really. What motivated me was sitting back for 6yrs and seeing the segregation and lack of unity in the community. Not only the lack of unity, but the lack of Hip Hop in general. This metropolitan city is WAY too big to only have a hand full of niggas that are dope. Here’s the thing tho…I’m POSOTIVE there’s more than a hand full. Here’s what the issue is. There’s no unity or community for them to present themselves. In return I finally just got fed up and was like this state needs to wake up if it wants to noticed in Hip Hop.
SF:What do you think it will take for Arizona to actually be known as a place for real hip hop, instead of being recognized as a place where rappers constantly hate on each other?
M. Well here’s the thing. AZ will never be known as a place for “real” Hip Hop cuz there ain’t enough heads that actually know what REAL Hip Hop is. Hip Hop doesn’t even exist in the industry so how the fuck is one state gonna be known for something that it has no true understand of? Harsh?…yup, but I really don’t give a fuck. I’ll take you to bible study real quick…”we however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us” 2 Corinthians 10:13. In other words….know your measure. If that still doesn’t make sense, I’ll break it down pre-school level. Know your limits and what your good at. Not everyone’s suppose to emcee. That’s why you don’t see full time promoters on stage performing or in the booth…cuz they suck at it. Hip Hop is a movement beyond rhyming and the music itself. If you rhyme and your shit is trash, then stop!!! PLEASE!!! Help Hip Hop. Don’t fuck it up, na-mean? I see niggas that got real cool marketing skills online but suck at both making beats AND rhyming. Maybe…just MAYBE your field is promotion. STOP RYHMIN!!! Until niggas really understand what Hip Hop is and know their lane, this state is pretty much doomed. The niggas that are signed ain’t fucking with nobody out here or trying to really hold the state down…shit Willie made that loud and clear. Even tho he cant speak for Juice and Rod, I still don’t see them fucking with anyone other than other national acts. Cats are really relying on those dudes to get them deals. In reality tho, they not worried about local acts. They trying to eat just like us. Not a lot of cats deserve deals anyway. Bottom line until niggas understand that Hip Hop is a movement and not a hobby cuz “its cool” AZ will always have a shit load of crews exiling other niggas cuz they ain’t part of their crew. It’ll continue to lead to lack of unity and in return AZ will continue to fail at becoming known for a place of real Hip Hop. Shit is real sad, but with out unity of all crews coming together and creating a community to push forward a movement, this state is fucked. Period. WAKE UP AZ!!
SF: If you could produce music for one artist (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
M. Ah man, good question!! There’s so many, but if I had to choose one it would be Vanilla Ice. Son is dumb illy with the rhyme shit. HAHAHAHAA! Just kidding. If I really had to choose one it would be Marvin Gaye. He was so ahead of its time. His music was very personal like mine. He wasn’t here long enough to have the impact on this world to his fullest ability yet his music still had a huge impact on people. I think if we could have linked up we could derail a lot of people’s train of thought and make a change in a lot people’s lives in this word.
SF: What other projects are you currently working on?
M. Man. There’s so many projects. My main project I’m working on is the “Lady Soul” ep that I’m taking my time on. I’m looking to release it early 2010. I’ve always produced my own shit but I stepped away from the beats so I can concentrate on writing and really go in on these niggas. So, the “Lady Soul” joint is produced by this cat named FLY the RABBIT out of the bay area. He’s dumb illy on the beats. He’s a real solid dude so go check him out at myspace.com/flytherabbit. Aside of that, I’m about to release an ep mid October titled “Just Me and My DJ” with my DJ J-20. Its got that old school boom bap feel with cuts galore on the hooks. Just taking it back to that early 90’s essence. Then, me and my dude Chuy from 8Bit Cynics in Oklahoma got a mix tape dropping called “Public Transit” We hurting feelings on this joint. Chuy’s one of my favorite emcees. They also family so check em out at www.8bitcynics.com. They a real solid group. I also got another ep I’m working on with my brother Kontoob called “Back For The First Time” which is about 15yrs long over due. He has an album dropping early fall too that I’m on also so go check him out (myspace.com/kontoob) and show him some love. So, yeah, as you can see I’m on my GRIZZLY so stay tuned.
SF: Are there any other artists (local or national) that you would like to possibly collaborate with in future projects?
M. Honestly yo, no one in particular. We all little people in an equally small world on the same grind. I’m open to collab with anyone who’s serious about creating good, wholesome, raw quality Hip Hop. If I had to choose one tho, it would be Rick (Juice) mainly because I get messages from niggas thinking I’m dissin him which is dumb and inaccurate. Truth be told Rick and I go back almost 15yrs. We met back in high school playing basketball against each other. We still speak occasionally, Never really about music tho. I know what he’s trying to build and what he’s working on so I just keep it on the same shit we been on the last 15yrs. Like I said tho, if I had to choose it would be him just so we can take it back on some 1995 Club Fusion shit. He’ll know what you’re talking about (laughs) shouts to Rick tho. Get a win for the city famo.
SF: How can your fans and those interested in working with you contact you?
M. They can really just google me. They’ll find me (laughs). Na, on the strength tho, the short cut to me is my myspace page which is myspace.com/medaforacle. Basically, back slash medaforacle on everything. Myspace, allazhiphop.com, hustlengrind.com, thatshiphop.com, twitter. Just back slash my name and you locate me. Shoot me a message. I’m a solid dude just get at me.
SF:Is there any final words or messages that you would like to put out there?
M. Yeah, AZ WAKE THE FUCK UP! And as always…LONG LIVE HIP HOP!!!!
