The Associated Press (AP) Top 25 College Football Rankings Poll (Week 11) saw the top six undefeated teams remain so, but AP Top 25 Poll also saw a bit of a shake-up as previously undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes took a hard loss to Northwestern. And four of the teams from numbers 7 – 11 lost their Week 11 football games Saturday. But that wasn’t all. Five more teams in the AP Top 25 would fall as well, including #18 Oklahoma, who would drop completely out of the college football rankings in Week 11. But the Top 3 remained the Top 3 as Florida, Texas, and Alabama continued to roll.
The big game of the week was the #3 Alabama – #9 LSU match-up. Touted as a battle of the defenses, it was exactly that, with the offenses switching to passing (something that neither offense has proved very successful at during the season) to confuse. Alabama simply outlasted and overpowered the LSU Tigers, winning 24-15. Alabama clinched a spot in the Southeast Conference championship game against Florida with the win. The winner of that game will no doubt play for the BCS national championship.
The AP Top 25 saw LSU remain in place for Week 11.
But #4 Iowa’s loss to a tough Northwestern team saw them fall out of the Top 10 of the AP Poll. Falling 11 notches to #15, the farthest drop in Week 11’s college football rankings. TCU took their place in the #4 slot, vaulting over Cincinnati, although Cincinnati won their game handily against UConn Saturday. TCU apparently impressed the most among the AP pollsters, winning their game over San Diego State by 43 points, 55-12.
Boise State is the sixth undefeated team in the AP Top 25 rankings.
Georgia Tech barely held off a tenacious Wake Forest team and were rewarded with a three slot jump to #7 in the current college football rankings. Pittsburgh was impressive against Syracuse and jumped the stationary LSU Tigers to get the No. 8 position. Ohio State leaped six notches — the most for any team in Week 11 — to land in the #10 spot, defeating the formerly No. 11 Nittany Lions. Penn State’s loss cost them eight positions in Week 11.
But Week 10’s #8 Oregon surprisingly lost to Stanford in a high scoring affair 51-42. Oregon dropped to #14 for Week 11. Stanford was rewarded with the #25 position in this week’s AP Top 25 poll.
No. 23 California got smothered by the Oregon State Beavers and dropped from the AP Top 25. No. 22 Notre Dame lost to Navy for the second straight year and fell out of the AP college football rankings as well. Brigham Young re-entered the AP Poll at No. 22. Clemson joined Stanford at the bottom of the Top 25.
Games to look forward to next week include the West Virginia (currently 7-2 but unranked) against the #5 Cincinnati Friday evening. Notre Dame, who has played tag with the AP Top 25 all season, will get another chance to re-enter the college football rankings when they take on the #8 Pitt Panthers. No. 10 Ohio State will go up against a No. 15 Iowa team hoping to rebound and go to the Rose Bowl. The undefeated #4 TCU Horned Frogs will take on the #16 Utah Utes. The tested #3 Alabama Crimson Tide will take on an always tough Mississippi State squad.
