Brownies are one of my favorite all-time deserts to make. Once in a while I experiment with my favorite recipe to make it a little different. Substituting applesauce for the oil in the recipe can be done with many cake and brownie recipes. This recipe for apple brownies substitutes using applesauce and adds walnuts to make it extra-special delicious.
I always use my base brownie recipe and then add the special ingredients depending on what I am making. When making apple brownies I use the following ingredients list:
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of applesauce
1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
1/3 cup of Hershey’s Cocoa
1/4 teaspoon of sea salt
1/2 cup of Hershey’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup of chopped walnuts
1/4 cup of diced apples
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
Hershey’s Syrup (you will be squirting this into the batter)
Have on hand vanilla ice cream to put on top of the brownie along with your favorite ice cream topping.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Get out an 8-inch pie plate
*(Note) if you use a 9-inch pie plate you will need to preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Small mixer bowl
Fork or egg whisk
Grease the pie plate with shortening
In the small bowl gently whisk the eggs with the whisk or fork.
Stir together the flour, cocoa, and salt.
Now, add the dry ingredients you just stirred together into the egg mixture.
Next, stir in the chocolate chips, walnuts, diced apples and vanilla.
Stir in the applesauce.
Squirt in a good measure (about 1/4 cup) of the Hershey’s Syrup.
Mix everything until blended (do not over mix).
Spread the mixture into the prepared pie plate.
Put into preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes or until set. You can test the brownies to see if they are done by placing a wooden toothpick in the center. It should come out clean when the brownies are done. To not over bake the brownies or they will be dry.
Top with vanilla ice cream and toppings and enjoy!
Additional presentation ideas:
If you want to instead of the ice cream and toppings you can serve dusted with confectioners sugar.
Makes an elegant tea for company.
No matter which way you choose to present your apple brownies they are sure to be a hit with the apple and walnut lovers in your family.
