Most people started their hike up the mountain of life with a smile on their face. They had plenty of food and water, and some people even purchased new hiking boots for the trip. Last year they saw a few snowflakes, but this year it turned into a snow storm. Everyone’s reaction to a snow storm is different. Some people keep hiking. Some people stop right where they are, and are freezing to death as their boots get covered with snow. Some people run to the closest cave, and are hiding out hoping the weather will pass.
For those who stop climbing, their food and water supplies start running low. They lose hope. They are hidden in a cave and cannot see the big picture of what is happening on that mountain. The rescuers cannot find them because they are hiding in the cave. Their only hope is to leave some items from their heavy backpack behind, and start climbing up the mountain again. The helicopters are waiting at the top of the mountain to rescue them, but they have to get up there first.
Are you still climbing in life, or have you given up? There is only one way to get to the top of a mountain, and that is to keep climbing. You have to choose to take a step. Then you have to choose to take another step. If your backpack is too heavy, then unload a few things. What do you really need to take with you?
Some of you are standing there right now in the middle of the path, looking back down the mountain. You are admiring your accomplishments, thinking people should be very proud of you for making it this far. You have overcome incredible obstacles to make it halfway up the mountain. Take a moment to look down at your feet. They are getting covered in frozen snow from your inactivity. It will get harder and harder to move, the longer you stand there. Brush off your feet right now and start hiking again. There will be no one to applaud your hiking accomplishments if you die on the mountain. Hike to the top of the mountain, and you can tell the world about what you did from the helicopter headset.
Most of the people reading this are in a cave. You have seen movies and believe that the safest place to ride out a storm is from a cave in the side of the mountain. It’s okay to take a rest in the cave, but how long have you been there now? Has it been a week or a month? Has it been 3 months or a year? Has it really been 3 years now? Imagine what kind of movie would be written if hikers chose to live in a cave for 3 years before finishing their climb up the mountain. The hikers wouldn’t even know the conditions of the trail anymore. Maybe it’s a better trail, or maybe the trail has been blocked by trees that have fallen. The day they began their hike from the bottom of the mountain, they had arranged for a helicopter to pick them up at the top. Three years later, there is no one to rescue the hikers even if they finish the climb. A short rest in a cave might be a great idea, but sooner or later you need to get back out into the elements and make the choice to keep climbing up the mountain.
In life, you can choose to keep hiking or you can choose to stop and hide until you die. Don’t forget how amazing the view is from the top of the mountain. Don’t forget how fun it will be to share your victory with the other hikers. Don’t forget there are other hills to climb and rivers to swim. Make the choice to keep hiking, no matter how hard your life path might be right now. You are the only one who can climb your own mountain. No one else has the strength to carry you the entire way.
