‘Avatar’ is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2009, but it’s not set to be released until December. However, this shouldn’t stop you from using the Na’vi aliens in the movie as inspiration for great Halloween costume ideas. Here you will find ideas on how to create both a female and male Na’vi Halloween costume, and while you can’t look exactly like the ‘Avatar’ aliens (they are pretty huge, after all), James Cameron fans will definitely get the idea, and they’ll probably be just a bit jealous that they didn’t come up with such a cool costume.
‘Avatar’ Na’vi Alien Halloween Costume Clothing Ideas
The male Na’vi Halloween costume is a little bit easier to put together than the female Na’vi, because the male protagonist in the movie is a human controlling an alien body. Therefore, his “Avatar” clothing consists of a tan T-shirt, khaki pants, and brown boots. You may also want to add a brown belt and an Indian Jones-style backpack. The female Na’vi Halloween costume will be a bit more difficult, since she wears very little. You’ll either need a light blue body suit with dark blue stripes painted on it or a flesh-colored bodysuit that you can dye blue. If you’re really not afraid of showing some skin, you may even want to opt for a white bikini and then paint your whole body and the bikini with blue body paint (more on the body painting later). For the female Na’vi Halloween costume, all you really need clothing-wise to wear over your blue body suit or bikini is a loin cloth, which you can fashion by braiding a few strips of faux leather into a belt long enough to tie around your waist and hanging a tan piece of cloth in the front and back center of it. You can glue the piece of cloth to the belt to keep it in place. For shoes, just wear a pair of gladiator-style sandals.
‘Avatar’ Na’vi Alien Halloween Costume Makeup Ideas
Of course the makeup is one of the most important parts of the Na’vi Halloween costume, and to get the look right, I advise you to buy both blue and white body paints. You will need to mix a bit of the white body paint with a bit of the blue body paint to create a lighter blue color and then apply it to all parts of your skin that will be visible (you may need some help with this, especially for the more-exposed female Na’vi Halloween costume). After you’ve let this light blue base dry, use some of the blue body paint by itself to paint on darker stripes (here’s a picture of a the female Na’vi face so you can see what I mean). If you’re wearing a blue body suit, you can use dark blue fabric paint to paint the stripes onto it. To make your eyes stand out more, you can line them using a very fine-tipped black eyeliner pencil. You may also want to use blue or black lipstick, so you don’t have to paint that part of your body.
‘Avatar’ Na’vi Alien Halloween Costume Accessories Ideas
The Na’vi have pointy ears and long tails, so for both the female and male costumes you will need to purchase a pair of pointy elf ears that you can paint blue using acrylic paint. For the tail, you can buy a cat tail from a cat Halloween costume and wrap it with blue material (you could cut an old white T-shirt into strips, wrap the tail with them, gluing them down as you go, and then paint the tail with the blue acrylic paint). For the male Na’vi Halloween costume, you will need a long, black wig that can be braided into one long, loose braid. For the female Na’vi Halloween costume, look for a dreadlock wig (one with lots of little braids), and glue a few white beads onto some of the dreadlocks.
For more native Na’vi accessories, you can make or purchase a lot of strings of white hairpipe (elongated, tube-shaped) beads of all different lengths to wear around your neck, and you may also want to add a few other accents like faux leather wristbands and armbands with colorful feathers glued on them. You can also buy a small piece of faux leather material to fashion a headband like the one in this picture (you can glue on white beads in place of the piece of bone). You could also carry around a bow (which is an important Na’vi weapon, based on the trailer for the movie).
The final and most expensive accessory for the Na’vi Halloween costume would be a pair of yellow contact lenses like these, or you could just use a little gold eyeshadow around your eyes to get a much cheaper but somewhat similar effect.
The Na’vi Halloween costume may not be one of the easiest to put together, but you’ll be way ahead of the ‘Avatar’ trend, and your Halloween costume will definitely be one of the biggest hits of Halloween night.
