Everyday there are new writers joining a variety of online writing websites to add their voice to the ever growing influence of online writing communities. Writers need to be clear on what the website expects from their contributors and what benefits the site offers to each writer. Before staring the journey to adding an additional voice to the online writing community, understand the goals and overall purpose of the website. Never join a writing site without knowing what the purpose of the site.
Understand the Guidelines
Every writing website is different and has a set of guidelines. Carefully read through the specific writing standards to be clear to submit content that is eligible for the site. While every site is different with distinct guidelines, there are some common threads that many sites share.
Many sites have banned the use of profanity due to the web filters possibly blocking their sites. It is impossible to make money from advertisers if no one is able to view the content.
No Adult Content
Again adult content is taboo on most writing sites because of the various web content filters.
No self promotion
Writers are at least discouraged from including their name and information within the text of the articles.
No Duplication of articles
No site wants to see writers copy their own content on the same site. Many sites allow content to be published on multiple sites but may be excluded from upfront payments.
No disparaging of other writer’s articles
Writers are warned not to engage in the detraction of other writers. Many sites allow debate articles or rebuttal responses. However, sites do not allow writers to attack one another in their articles.
Minimum word length
Every writing site has a word length requirement. These requirements are both on the minimum end and maximum end. The first area is the minimum with a basic understanding of the least words or characters allowed to submit articles. There are also various maximum word lengths for articles. Be sure to know these guidelines before trying to publish online articles.
Plagiarism is the copying of another persons work and claiming it as ones own. Not only is this unethical, it is also banned on every writing site.
Online writing success depends on the level of commitment a writer. One area of commitment is being professional in the manner a writer conducts themselves. Being aware of guidelines of the writing site is one of the basic requirements of being a good writer. There is no way to possibly have lasting value and lasting success as a writer without knowing the expectations and regulations of every writing website joined.
