BCS Rankings Week 10: Oregon is Here!

by sawpan

The week 10 BCS rankings have changed a bit from the week 9 BCS rankings, with Texas now the #2 BCS team in the land. That wasn’t the only change in the week 10 BCS rankings though, as Cincinnati was able to move up to the #5 spot with USC losing and dropping hard in the BCS rankings. It’s a familiar team at #1 again, as Florida has continued to rule the SEC, and is starting to win over the computer votes as well. That difference in points for and points against seems to weighing heavy on the computer calculations, as Florida beat another weak opponent to increase their point differential. It really helped them in the week 10 BCS rankings to distance themselves from #2.

Oregon took a big step towards playing back into the 2009 BCS picture by knocking off USC on Saturday, and made the move from #10 up to #8 in the week 10 BCS rankings. That meant that USC had to drop, and they fell all the way down to #12 in the BCS. Their chances at playing in the 2009 college football national championship seem to have gone out the window, especially with there still being seven undefeated teams near the top of the BCS rankings, the USA Today Coaches Poll, and the AP Top 25 Poll. The new BCS poll isn’t as friendly to the mid-major teams anymore though, as the distance in points is starting to increase.

Texas was able to jump past Alabama in the week 10 BCS standings, and that is going to make people to Texas happy, but it is also going to frustrate Alabama fans immensely. The only thing that Alabama did wrong this week was have a bye week, and that cost them in the coaches poll first, and now in the newest BCS standings as well. It hardly seems fair, but we can’t talk about fair without discussing the possibility that several mid-level teams could be shut out of the BCS bowl picture with the way that things are going now. LSU is still hanging around as well, hoping that someone will slip up and that they can crash the national championship picture in the same fashion that they have done in the past.

Iowa is still getting more respect in the BCS Bowl Projections than in any other poll, and it should show people that Iowa truly is a talented team in the Big-10. Currently one of the computers has them ranked first, and they are ranked second by four other computers. It’s just enough to make up for the low ranking by the Coaches and the Harris Poll so far. Right below Iowa is Cincinnati at #5, TCU at #6, and Boise State at #7, all just hoping that they could get the chance to show what they can do in a major BCS Bowl game.
