We wish money grew on trees but it doesn’t. Chocolate doesn’t grow on trees either. However, if you ever find your way to Beaufort, South Carolina follow your nose to “The Chocolate Tree” candy store. They are located at 507 Carteret Street, Beaufort, SC 29902. We were on vacation in Beaufort last year and had someone back home looking after our garden. I wanted to give that person something as a thank you gift. I know I would be thrilled if someone gave me chocolate, so that is what I decided to get her.
Riding through the town of Beaufort you actually have time to read the names on the stores as at certain times of the day as the traffic is dead stopped. I saw a sign that said “The Chocolate Tree”, told my husband to hang a quick right and there we were – at the gates of my kind of heaven! We could smell the chocolate outside and it grabbed a hold of us and led us through the door.
The Chocolate Tree is not a huge building, but a lot goes on inside. Pat Green, the owner, started the business in 1980. They make chocolate candy as well as other types of candy. I have been there several times in the last few years and never leave empty-handed. The candy calls to me, “Buy me I’m delicious”. And it speaks the truth! You can buy a pre-packed box of chocolates or you can buy it by the piece and pick your favorites. That is what I do. I usually buy 12 pieces, 10 for me and 2 for my husband! We always sample a piece the day we buy it but I hold off and save the rest to take home. That way I get a little piece of Beaufort back home in Tennessee.
The best way to buy candy from The Chocolate Tree is in person – just stand in front of huge display cases laden with heavenly creations while your mouth waters and your wallet opens. You can also call them, fax them or e-mail them. They make it real convenient for us chocolate lovers!
All the candy sold at The Chocolate Tree is made on the premises. The chocolates shown on their website is just a tiny portion of what is available in the store. There is display case after display case of their chocolate candy. I saw a chocolate lollipop in the shape of a foot made of milk chocolate and the toenails were painted pink – so cute! They also have display after display of non-chocolate candy – there is something for every sweet tooth at The Chocolate Tree. I prefer to pick out my goodies in person but it is nice to know that if I get a desire for The Chocolate Tree’s convections when I get back home I can order a box and have it shipped.
The Chocolate Tree is open Monday-Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday. Besides chocolate they have caramels, gummy candy, fudge, hard candy and lots more. They also have all the supplies you need to make your own candy at home. The employees are friendly and helpful.
I now have a white box with the brown Chocolate Tree logo sitting in a place of honor – I have only opened it once, to give my husband one piece of candy! I am saving the rest for home. I know I won’t be disappointed in my choice of dark chocolate candy from The Chocolate Tree! I can hardly wait to taste the chocolate covered key lime, or the chocolate covered vanilla marshmallow, or the chocolate covered pretzel….hum, I can taste it now!
