When you think of the best hotels, you may picture suites with comfortable beds you could spend hours in, large bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs, and decadent room service eaten on a balcony with spectacular views. And while these are all wonderful amenities of many top hotels, they can’t hold a candle to the unique hotels by the Gaylord company. One hotel of theirs in particular, the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, provided my favorite hotel experience of all time.
This top hotel is more than just a comfortable space filled with amenities; it provides a world within a building that takes you to a different place. The Opryland Hotel, though located in the Music City, makes you feel like you’ve entered a tropical oasis. In its different atriums, you can walk down garden paths filled with beautiful plants and flowers, dine with views of cascading waterfalls and dancing fountains, and take a scenic boat ride, all inside the hotel! Many hotel rooms have balconies that overlook these masterpieces, allowing you to have coffee with views of a virtual Garden of Eden right in the middle of Nashville, TN.
The best time to visit is Christmastime. From late November through the New Year, this unique hotel is transformed into a magical wonderland of lights and decorations, unmatched anywhere else. Each garden is strung with thousands of twinkle lights, an outdoor garden tells the story of the nativity through sculptures, decorations and trees adorn every corner, and music and shows, including the famous Rockettes, add to the festive atmosphere. Named “The Most Christmassy Hotel in the Nation” by the Travel Channel, the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN gives visitors from around the world the ultimate Christmas experience. My husband took me here on an impressive date when we had just started going out, and one year later he brought me back, led me to the wedding gazebo in the Delta adorned in twinkle lights, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. It was the most romantic spot this Christmas-lover could imagine for a proposal, and three kids later, we’re now taking them back to this special spot.
I thought that the closest I’d get to the Opryland Hotel experience was walking through as a tourist, but when I attended a convention there, I brought my husband and sons along and we got to stay. We had a traditional guest room overlooking an outdoor pool, which is their basic accommodation, but it was nicer than most hotels I’ve stayed in. The king-sized bed was so comfortable, I could have slept for weeks. The mattress was just the right firmness, and the sheets and down comforter were soft and pillow-y; every night I sank in, wrapped myself up in them, and went to right sleep. The rest of the room was upscale standard, with a television tucked away in an armoire, a desk, and a vanity area outside of the bathroom where you could do hair and makeup steam-free and make your morning coffee. The bathroom had a spacious sink and vanity, shower-tub combo, and toilet. The whole room was clean and bright, and everything that we needed, including a portable crib, was attended to in a prompt and friendly fashion. This was especially impressive because when we stayed, thousands of people were checking in at the same time for the same national conference, which showed us that the Opryland Hotel not only provides top-of-the-line service, its staff is also well-trained in efficiency and can handle large crowds and conferences without a breakdown in the system.
The corridors are quiet and spacious, which is surprising considering the volume of guests and tourists the hotel accommodates each day. But despite all of the things you can do, from shopping to spa treatments to a boat ride, there are lots of little nooks to just relax and have a quiet time, something this mother needs! On conference breaks, I would get a meal at the food court and just sit by a waterfall. Gazing at the lush greenery and listening to the water, I was able to collect my thoughts and just rest for awhile as if I were in a private tropical garden. Besides the food court seating, several restaurants in the hotel, including a sushi bar and steak house, offer this unique outdoor-dining experience, which can be very romantic and a whole lot of fun. Other eating establishments along the indoor corridors take you to other places as well, like a southern tearoom, a sports bar, or an authentic Irish pub. And that’s what makes the Opryland Hotel so wonderful; you can choose a variety of experiences to suit your tastes without ever leaving the grounds. At the same time, all of the fun and excitement of Nashville, TN is just minutes away from the door.
If you’re visiting Nashville, you must come and visit this unique hotel, which is one of the best hotels in the country. At the very least, spend an afternoon wandering around its well-manicured gardens, browse in its shops, and have lunch or dinner in one of its restaurants. But for a restful retreat and unparalleled hotel experience, come and stay in one of its many rooms and suites. You’ll have such a great time, I guarantee you’ll be planning your next trip before you check out.
