A veggie burger is a veggie burger and they are all basically the same. So I thought too. Boca burgers are good and I would buy them as a staple if I felt so inclined, but I also know that most places don’t even use these. Thus my reluctance to eat the standard veggie burger now featured on the menu of most diners and other dining establishments. So it was that on a warm afternoon this summer we went to go and see The Dux in Madison Square Park on 5th avenue and 23rd street, if memory serves correctly. There was a long line of people and I remember thinking that this is ridiculous for a free concert where there seems to be more than enough space.
Imagine my surprise when I looked again and found that the line we were looking at was not for the concert, but was apparently a daily occurrence in this park. The line, my friends, is for a place called “The Shake Shack”. If you have not heard of this place, then you are missing out. They are apparently legendary in the city for burgers and have gotten awards for the best burger and hot dogs in NYC since 2004 when the first Shake Shack opened its door on the Upper West Side. Right now they have three branches, with the latest one in Citi Field. Let me tell you that I would go there just for this place!
We joined this line in July 2009 and immediately relaxed with the friendly chatter all around us. The line is of course on cam and if you go online before you leave home, you can see what it would be like once you arrive. The best time to go apparently (according to some employees inside) is from 11am to 12 pm and from 2pm to 3pm just before and after the lunch rush.
What should you order? Well, for me there are three things on this menu that are not to be missed. You absolutely must have the “Shroom” burger. This is the best veggie burger I have ever tasted and I will go back there every day if I felt that my waist line could stand it. The shroom is two Portobello mushroom with muenster and cheddar cheese melted between them, breaded and fried. It is absolutely wonderful and to make it even more exciting, you can double stack it for $2 more.
Then they have the cheese fries for $3,75 and Nathan’s has nothing on this. It is so delicious, you literally lick your fingers clean after eating it. All of this is so fresh and tasty that Shake Shack does not claim to have customers, but they call people going there “Shack Fans”. This is true since I see myself as a fan.
Of course you should not miss the shake – the strawberry shake is thick, fresh and delicious and to make it all even more distressing for those wanting to shed some pounds, this place even has special custard ice cream with flavors that are so different and interesting that it would pay to go back there daily just to try it all.
The price range on the menu is anything from $2,75 to $9,50. There are two lines as well – one for the food and one for drinks, custards, wine and beer.
Go there or, as they used to say a long time ago, be square.
