When my daughter and some of her classmates entered a cake decorating contest for Homecoming week, they needed a cake that would hold its shape when cut. My husband purchased several boxes of Betty Crocker Pound Cake at Wal-Mart and the results were great. Even though the package directions have you use a bread pan to bake Betty Crocker Pound Cake it worked very well as a sheet cake too. My daughter was able to create football helmet shapes, which she covered with fondant (to be placed on a football field base). These held up well over night (and beyond) and her team got a very respectable second place.
Betty Crocker Pound Cake comes in a bright red box with a bit of yellow trim, and shows a picture of the product as a sliced loaf garnished with a few berries and mint leaves. As pictured, I think Betty Crocker Pound Cake could be eaten somewhat like a sweet bread (like banana or pumpkin bread) I think it could also be used as a base for strawberry shortcake. There are very tempting recipes on the box we purchased, for Tiaramisu-Toffee Dessert and Orange Soaked Pound Cake. These both sound really good, so I may have to purchase more Betty Crocker Pound Cake and try it out.
Prepared as a sheet cake, I was surprised that this firm and durable cake was also fairly moist and very tasty. The flavor of Betty Crocker Pound Cake is, in my opinion, like a cross between a white cake and a Twinkie. Betty Crocker Pound Cake is also easy to prepare and only requires 2 eggs and a bit of water or milk, in addition to the mix. There are several bake times listed (from thirty eight to fifty eight minutes), but none are for the cake pan we used, so if you decide to use this as a sheet cake, you will have to estimate, keep an eye on it, and do a toothpick test to tell if it’s done.
Betty Crocker Pound Cake is better for you than I thought it would be. If you eat one eighth of the cake (which I think is a very big serving) there are 260 calories and 11 percent of your saturated fat for the day (prepared). However, you also get 4 percent of your daily recommended value of calcium, 6 percent of your daily recommended value of iron, 8 percent of your daily recommended value of thiamin, 8 percent of your daily recommended value of riboflavin, 4 percent of your daily recommended value of niacin, and 10 percent of your daily recommended value of folic acid. Not too bad for dessert!!
So if you are looking for a product that is both versatile and delicious, I highly recommend Betty Crocker Pound Cake.
