Blueberry Pie Product Comparison Review: Hostess and Table Talk Fruit Pies

by sawpan

Blueberry pie is one of my favorite desserts. I can eat blueberry pie at any time of the day or night. Whether it is homemade or commercially – baked, I love trying varieties of blueberry pie that I’ve never eaten before. For many years, I’ve been eating Hostess Blueberry Pies, which are sometimes sporadically stocked and sold at food retailers across America. A couple of nights ago, I purchased and ate a Table Talk Blueberry Pie for the first time and I’m very glad that I did so. I found the Table Talk Blueberry Pie to be not only very tasty, but also attractive to look at and economically priced. Because I am now a fan of both of these brands of pies, I have decided to write a product comparison review of the two products. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product comparison review of the Hostess Blueberry Pie and the Table Talk Blueberry Pie.

Size
The net weight of the Hostess Blueberry Pie is 4.5 ounces. The net weight of the Table Talk Blueberry Pie is 4 ounces. Each of these pies is large enough to satisfy my appetite, but I think I feel slightly more satisfied after eating the Table Talk variety.

Packaging
The Hostess Blueberry Pie is packaged in a cellophane – like paper wrapper. The wrapper is easy to open, but does not re – close very effectively. The Table Talk Blueberry Pie is packaged in a small cardboard box. Inside the box, the pie is further packaged in a cute little aluminum pie tin. Maybe it’s just a marketing ploy, but I think that the aluminum pie tin validates the authenticity of the product. A bonus with this pie tin is that it can be re – used. Both of these brands of blueberry pie also list all relevant nutritional information on their packaging.

Texture
Texture is an important factor when it comes to comparing these two brands of blueberry pie. I feel that the textures of these pies are markedly different. The Hostess Blueberry Pie features a sturdy, glazed crust that envelopes the entire pie and a juicy, somewhat – loose blueberry filling. The Table Talk Blueberry Pie features a more traditional – appearing round crust that is much flakier and softer than the Hostess variety and the blueberry filling seems to be a little bit tighter in texture.

This product also contains 10 grams of saturated fat, grams trans fat, 21 grams total fat, 20 mg of cholesterol, 70 total carbohydrates, 460 mg of sodium, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 31 grams of sugars and 3 grams of protein.

The Table Talk Blueberry Pie contains 380 calories, with 170 calories from fat, per one pie (114 grams) serving. This product also contains 9 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 18 grams total fat, 0 mg of cholesterol, 380 mg of sodium, 52 grams total carbohydrates, 5 grams of dietary fiber, 20 grams of sugars and 4 grams of protein.

Price
The retail price normally charged for one Hostess Blueberry Pie at Hartford, Connecticut area food retailers is approximately $1.29. The retail price normally charged for one Table Talk Blueberry Pie at Hartford, Connecticut area food retailers is approximately $.99c. While I think that both brands of pies are reasonably – priced, I think that the price of the Table Talk Blueberry Pie is more of a value.

Taste / Flavor
The flavors offered by both of these brands of blueberry pie are tasty and satisfying, but I definitely think that the flavor of the Table Talk Blueberry Pie tastes more like a homemade blueberry pie. After eating the Table Talk Blueberry Pie, I have come to think that the Hostess Blueberry Pie might be just a tiny bit too sweet for my tastes. To me, the flavor offered by the Table Talk Blueberry Pie is not only more like homemade, but it is also more well – balanced.

Availability
While Hostess Fruit Pies are often stocked and sold at many food retailers, the selection of flavors changes frequently. Sometimes, it is difficult to find these pies, but I think that might be seasonal in nature. Table Talk Pies are not all that easy to find, either. Availability of these products are dependent upon distribution of the product in your area.

Overall Rating
Both the Hostess Blueberry Pie and the Table Talk Blueberry Pie are flavorful products that are reasonably – priced. These items differ from each other in packaging, shape, size and texture, but they are both satisfying to eat. Although I slightly prefer the flavor, consistency and overall quality of the Table Talk Blueberry Pie, I still highly recommend both of these brands of blueberry pie.
