You can make your own soap, shampoos, ointments, lotions, washes, disinfectants, tinctures and more with the use of essential oils. Essential oils in their pure state can be harmful and cause irritation to the skin so you should wear rubber or latex gloves when working with them. You should always dilute essential oils down with a carrier oil such as almond, sunflower, olive or vegetable oil.

To store your essential oil mixtures you should use a container with an airtight lid and store it somewhere out of direct light or sunlight. This will help to keep your mixtures fresh for each use. When using a new mixture that is made with essential oils you should always perform a spot test on a small area of skin and wait twenty-four hours to make sure that you do not experience an allergic reaction to the mixture.

You should never use essential oil mixtures if you are pregnant, breast feeding, taking an blood-thinner such as Warfin (Coumadin), have breathing problems or taking an MAO inhibitor unless otherwise directed to do so by a licensed medical doctor. You should always discuss it with your doctor before using any type of an essential oil mixture if you have a life threatening disease.
