Eye-gouging is so serious, that it is even illegal in MMA (mixed martial arts) fights. MMA fights are usually fighting events where pretty much anything goes.
That being said, football is a rough sport. Players rough house each other, and the whole incident could have been just one big misunderstanding. However, the eye-gouging incident between Brandon Spikes and Waushaun Ealey was caught on video, so some sort of punishment had to be considered.
