The Brandon Spikes eye gouging video is very eye opening. In it, Brandon Spikes gouges a player’s eye or eyes as he jumps on the player during a team tackle. Not only was his involvement in the play not necessary, but the obvious intent of inflicting injury upon another player was right there in video for the world to see. It is quickly becoming known as the “Brandon Spikes eye gouging incident”, and if Florida and the SEC doesn’t step in and take immediate action, then the NCAA needs to first issue some penalties, and then issue some sanctions against the University of Florida for allowing behavior like this from their players.
The Brandon Spikes eye gouging incident took place on the live CBS broadcast of the Florida vs. Georgia game this Saturday, between two teams that are admittedly rivals on the gridiron. It is very clear in the video of the play, that Georgia running back Washaun Ealey has been taken down by several other Florida defensive players, and that the play is clearly about over. It is then apparent in the video that Brandon Spikes intentionally puts his hand inside of Ealey’s facemask and begins rooting around in the eye area of the Georgia running back. You can even see as Ealey reaches up in distress to try to get the hand of Spikes out of his facemask. (Video on Page 2)
There was no flag on the play, as it happened too quickly for the officials to notice what had occurred and in a post game interview when asked about it, Coach Urban Meyer noted that he did not see it. His response was that “if that’s the case, I’ll have a very serious talk with him.” If it is the case that Spikes did indeed try to intentionally impair the Georgia player, then it needs to go far beyond just talking to Spikes, but rather to complete suspension or expulsion from the school. This is behavior that is not acceptable on the football field, and even if fans of the game claim that it has happened before, it is time to put an end to it.
Earlier in the season Oregon Ducks running back LeGarrette Blount was suspended and virtually kicked off the team for throwing a punch during a heated moment on the sidelines of a game against Boise State. At that moment people in football erupted, and nobody was supporting Blount’s actions, even though the fight was instigated by a Boise State player. In the case of Brandon Spikes, there was no instigation, and if the video is telling the whole story, the Brandon Spikes eye gouging is a gross act of violence that should not be condoned by anyone. It’s time for Florida Officials and the SEC to act immediately on this incident.
