Many in the world of country music were shocked when the country duo Brooks & Dunn announced, via their website, that they will be going their separate ways in 2010. Brooks & Dunn consists of Leon Eric “Kix” Brooks III (guitar) and Ronnie Gene Dunn (vocals). The two have been playing country music together since 1990 when Tim DuBois of Arista Records paired them together in hopes of creating a successful act. Influenced by classic rock, Brooks & Dunn has released 10 studio albums, had 23 number one hits, and have won numerous country music awards (CMAs). Together, Brooks and Dunn became legends of country music.
Brooks & Dunn’s success started back in 1991 when their first single “Brand New Man” topped country music charts at number one. Brooks & Dunn’s debut album, Brand New Man, is one of the best selling country music albums of all time. Brand New Man has sold over six million copies. In 1996 Brooks & Dunn won the CMA for entertainer of the year.
In 2001, following the 9/11 attacks, Brooks & Dunn gained national popularity when their song “Only in America” became a patriotic anthem. “Only in America” celebrates the freedom Americans have to pursue their dreams. Brooks & Dunn uses imagery such as a bus full of children and an aspiring singer to make their patriotic point.
In the mid 2000s Brooks & Dunn were at the center of the country music world. The duo hosted the Country Music Awards three years in a row, from 2004 to 2006. At the 2006 Country Music Awards Brooks & Dunn were the recipients of Song of the Year and Single of the Year for their song “Believe”. In 2007 the duo released their 10th studio album, entitled Cowboy Town.
Brooks & Dunn will be releasing their last album entitled #1’s and Then Some on September 8th. As the album title suggests the record will include all of Brooks & Dunn’s number one hits, plus some more. Included in the “plus more” category is Brooks & Dunn’s latest single “Indian Summer”. The duo is planning a farewell tour, dubbed “Last Rodeo Tour”, for 2010.
Many people are already speculating what will be next for the country music legends. Amongst the speculation is Leon Brooks and Ronnie Dunn will each do solo work. Only time will tell what each man plans to do after they bid farewell to each other and the Brooks & Dunn fans.
