Burn Notice Season 3 Episode 9 Long Way Back was about life changes and how they often go awry. In other words, Michael, Fi, and even Sam, if you want to give God a good laugh, tell him about your plans for the future.
Some spoilers surely follow.
Fi starts the episode with every intention of going back to the Auld Sod and away from Michael losing his soul. Michael arrives at Fi’s house to return a favorite firearm to find her big brother Sean, fresh from Ireland itself, announcing that the Auld Sod has come for Fi in the form of Tommy O’Neal, a particularly mad bomber who was instrumental in Fi’s leaving the service of the Irish Republican Army and going free lance. Michael suddenly becomes Michael McBride, whom he was known as in Ireland, with a brogue fit for the land of poets and warriors.
O’Neal not only would like to see Fi dead, but is also in Miami to take her away to be sold to one of her many enemies back home. O’Neal is one of those terrorists who wanted his victims numerous, innocent, and suffering. Fi may be violent, but she has some scruples.
Burn Notice Season 3 Episode 9 Long Way Back also features Madeline planning to sell the old house where Michael grew up and has knocked about by his father in. Despite the latter, Michael is somewhat nonplussed about the scene of his eventful childhood going on the auction block.
The process of dissuading Tommy O’Neal from trying to have at Fi is complicated by brother (especially Sean) and sister’s tendency to the direct approach when dealing with a problem. Michael prefers the more subtle approach. O’Neal can hardly menace Fi is he is in jail for having one of his signature bombs, to be provided by Michael, Sam, Fi, and Sean.
Complications ensue also when Tommy O’Neal find Fi anyway and spirit her away while (big mistake there) leaving Michael alive. Who betrayed them? Who but Strickler, the agent to the spies who is helping Michael with his burn notice. This is another big mistake. Michael cares very much about getting back in the good graces of the Agency. He is in love with Fi. Strickler has but a second to contemplate his folly as a bullet enters his chest.
Michael and Sam rescue Fi, and plant the bomb and the lifeless body of Strickler on O’Neal’s getaway boat. O’Neal will be lucky if he is not given to the British or even the Irish government. Sean is so thrilled at finding his sister alive again, he is not even concerned that Michael is not an Irish rebel named McBride but an American spy named Westen.
Diego, Michael’s CIA contact, is not so thrilled. What the hell was Michael doing dealing with a man like Strickler? Fi had been asking Michael the same thing, but not Michael must know the lengths his mistake have taken him. Michael finds Diego with his head blown open by a sniper bullet, perhaps at the behest of the old white guys in the helicopter whom we met at the end of Season 2. Michael finds himself really out in the Cold at the end of Burn Notice Season 3 Episode 9 Long Way Back.
And that’s it until the winter, alas.
