“Failure is not a single cataclysmic event. You don’t fail overnight, failure is a few errors in judgment, repeated every day” said Jim Rohm (thinkexist.com). George W. Bush’s repeated errors in judgment are why his presidency was a failure. There have been many bad presidents in American history such as Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren Harding and Richard Nixon. But is George W. Bush the worst president ever?
There are many reasons why George W. Bush’s presidency was a failure. The Bush Administration had the worst economy since Ronald Reagan’s presidency. He entered the White House with a 200 billion surplus. He turned that surplus into a $500 billion deficit in less than three years. This is what led America to the recession. Likewise, the Bush administration borrowed from 2001-05 $1.5 trillion that are more than all the previous presidencies combined. The White House administrations from 1789 to 2000 borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion. These bad decisions he made caused life to be more difficult for the average American. The problems of the economy have led to issues with employment. He presided over about three million jobs lost in his first two ½ years in office that was the worst since Herbert Hoover.
The Iraq war was one of Bush’s biggest failures. He said one of the reasons the Iraq war began was to find weapons of mass destruction. However, the weapons of mass destruction were never found. The war was started on false pretenses. “A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks” (cbsnews.com/stories). The study concluded that the statements “were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses” (cbsnews.com/stories). The Iraq War led to 4,349 Americans dying in war (icasualties.org). Iraq War did not help America’s image. After 9/11 a lot of countries had a compassion for America. The Iraq War turned that compassion to a dislike of America. It caused other countries to become discontent of American and its policies.
He considered himself a compassionate conservative and he said that he was not on the far right politically. However, his actions and policies show that he was on the far right. He does not believe in bipartisanship. He did not listen to the Democrats point of view. He demonized Democrats. Equally important, he divided the nation instead of instead of bringing the country together. He also ignored issues that he should have paid more attention too. He did not listen to scientists warning that the hurricanes could intensify. If he paid more attention to scientists warning Hurricane Katrina would not have been such a disaster. “The hurricane cost at least 1,300 people their lives” (Encarta.msn.com).
George W. Bush’s presidency was a failure. Still, he is not considered by most historians the worst president ever. James Buchanan is considered the worst president ever. He was president from 1857 to 1861. James Buchanan did nothing as the country crumbled when Lincoln’s selection triggered secession of one southern state after another. He hoped for compromise or diplomacy.
But, leaders of the secession did not want compromise. During his administration the Union broke apart. The country was divided over the issues of slavery. He detested slavery and he felt it was inhumane. However, he never publicly as president spoke out against slavery. He gave in to pro-slavery supporters instead of fighting for his beliefs. He endorsed the pro- slavery constitution letting Kansas become a slave state. By the time he left office seven states left the Union and confederates had looted the arsenals in the South. He had unwillingness to challenge those states that declared their intention to withdraw from Union after Lincoln’s election. He let Southerners loot whatever federal assets they could. He could have used his power as commander in chief which might have stopped the rebels. He decided not to do that which led to the Civil War that took more than half a million American lives and he ruined the south for generations.
James Buchanan is the worst president ever. This is because doing nothing at a time of crisis is worse than doing something wrong. “Better to do something imperfectly than to do nothing flawlessly” said Dr. Robert Schuller (www.quotes.net). He refused to take action when American was crumbling before his eyes. It is not good for a leader to be passive and indecisive. George W. Bush made tough decisions during his presidency. He took action after crises such as 9/11. He was not indecisive. His solutions were sometimes ineffective. However, it is better for a leader to try to solve a problem then to just let things fall apart.
