Miracles are an act of God. That is what the Bible declares. The Bible is full of miracles, such as Jesus walking on water, Jesus turning water into wine, or the flood in Noah’s day. We know by faith these things happened, the Bible says they did. We also know God created the heaven and earth and all life, it’s a matter of faith. Heb 11:3 states, “we know by faith that that which is seen was made from that which is not seen.” You cannot find out the details of the creation anymore than you can reason out the date, time and location of your birth. Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “no one can find out the work that God does from the beginning to the end.” So human beings cannot know when the earth will end or when it began, except by revelation from God. Experience also teaches us some things are just beyond our ability to know, except we believe someone else, all our histories are based on believing a witness.
Science does not deal with miracles because they cannot be tested by our five senses. To show how the scientific method or human ability fails in light of a Biblical miracle we need only to imagine a scientist talking with a few people in the Bible who just witnessed a miracle. A scientist cannot repeat it nor test a miracle so the scientist is left with testing what was produced by the miracle like wine, bread, or the creation itself.
Take for example three scientists from today and set them in the Garden of Eden on day 9. Would they be able to test the age of any living thing? They would see adult animals, plants, insects, etc. They would know, based on experience, that these living things had parents because that is what is happening today. Yet by faith we believe these original mammals, birds, plants and all life were just created, they had no parents, but they had a Maker, God.
These scientists no matter how honest and sincere would be living in what the miracle produced, something they could test. Yet their knowledge and beliefs would not allow them to see a fruit bearing tree God created on day 3 as anything other than a seed that had grown with time to become a mature tree. They would reason a certain amount of time must have past for this tree to bear fruit. If they asked Adam how old the trees in Garden of Eden or the animals were, he might say; “I saw God make them on day 6, so they are 3 days old. If the scientists concluded any other age than what Adam told them, any answer they reasoned would be incorrect. This would be true for all living things, the earth and the whole universe.
Now take those same scientists and move them along the time scale back to the present. If their original determination of age were based on observable evidence rather than what Adam and Eve told them these scientist would be incorrect.
Science is at a loss in the face of any miracle or any divine action. How did all these people get fed? Well, there were three loaves of bread, a few fishes, and Jesus prayed. Were did the earth come from? God “made it from that which is not seen.”
Ask any scientist how old the wine was that Jesus made from water? All his or her honest efforts, all equipment, and his or her five senses would fail a scientist at this point. The age he or she comes up with may appear true, and might be if this wine was made the natural way, but this wine was just made by Jesus, by faith. The wine is a miracle. So all the data they gathered would be incorrect. Science does not deal in miracles; those are unexplained singularities for them. So scientists arriving later on the scene are incapable of finding out what God did. Remember what Solomon wrote, “no one can find out the work that God does from the beginning to the end.” See also 1 Corinthians 2:9-11.
As it is with the wine so also it is with the age of the earth. Humans cannot find out by testing when it was made, it’s unknowable, except by faith. One has to believe what the witnesses say or one does not know. This is true of your birthday and it is also true of the birthday of the earth, only those present can tell you when the beginning was.
The follower of God should not argue with someone about the age of the earth since it is the result of God’s divine power, like the wine that came from water. If all assumptions were true there maybe little error in calculating the apparent age of the earth, but the earth’s real age is known only by God.
You either believe God’s Word or you don’t. It is written; “walk by faith not by sight,” God bless.
