Here are three quick craft ideas for kids to make homemade ornaments this Christmas. Perfect for decorating your own tree or for gifting to teachers, coaches and so on, these crafts can be fun for the whole family to make.
Cinnamon Stick Christmas Tree Ornaments
Suggested Materials: Cinnamon Stick, Green Fabric Strips, Ribbon, Hot Glue Gun & Sticks
In terms of homemade, do-it-yourself ornaments for kids, this cinnamon stick craft that my mom taught me years ago actually turns out pretty nice. You simply cut out rectangular pieces of green holiday fabric and tie 3 pieces on each cinnamon stick, one fabric piece at the bottom, one in the middle, and one near the top. You can trim the pieces afterward if you want to create more of an overall triangular shape with your fabric branches.
You can then glue or hot glue a curved ribbon on the back of your tree from which you can hang your ornament. You can also add some sort of star if you want to. In our house, we simply just attach a yellow star bead to the top of each of our Christmas trees. Not only do these cinnamon stick ornaments look nice, but they smell nice too.
Fun Foam Snowflake Ornaments
Suggested Materials: Fun Foam, Scissors, Hot Glue Gun & Sticks, Ribbon
Creating snowflake ornaments out of fun foam can be as simple or as complicated as you and your kids want to make it. One option is to cut out a palm-size circle of one color of fun foam and then cut out a medium snowflake of another piece of fun foam to hot glue onto the center of your circle, creating a multi-layered ornament in which the snowflake is effectively bordered by the circular piece.
If your kids aren’t ready to use a hot glue gun under your supervision, regular Elmer’s glue could also be used, but some patience might be required to let the layers dry as they should. When the fun foam layers are situated as desired, simply glue both ends of a short ribbon onto the back to create an easy way to hang your Christmas ornament.
Using other shapes and colors of fun foam, you can obviously make other designs than just snowflakes if you want some variety. Be creative and see what all your family can come up with to get into the holiday sprit.
Popsicle Stick Reindeer Ornaments
Suggested Materials: Popsicle Sticks, Glue, Brown Pipe Cleaner, Black Marker, Red Pompom
Using the glue of your choice, place three popsicle sticks into a triangle, overlapping the ends to give you the needed room to apply glue and fasten the sticks together. This wooden triangle will act as the face in your reindeer ornament. Position the triangle so one of the angles is directly pointed at you. To give your reindeer a nose, attach a red pompom, or accessory of your choice, on this angle closest to you.
Attach a brown pipe cleaner on each of the remaining angles to act as antlers, either curving the pipe cleaners around the sticks or gluing them on. Curl or position the antlers however you wish: straight up in the air, winding to the sides, etc. Using a black marker, draw two circle eyes across the top popsicle stick in between your antlers. Attach a ribbon to the back from which the reindeer head will be able to hang on, and you’re done!
