You don’t have to abandon your Christmas decorating because the economy sucks. There are several ways that you can decorate your living room for Christmas while on a budget. My family is on a budget and our living room always looks festive at Christmas time. One of the main things I recommend doing is shopping at affordable places like the Dollar Store or local thrift shops. This article will give you five suggestions on living room decorating ideas for Christmas.
Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Living Room for Christmas #1: Christmas Presents & Gift Baskets
One of the cheap ways I love to decorate is to use Christmas presents and gift baskets that will later be given out on Christmas day. I have a lot of space on top of my bookcases in my living room that I like to fill with decorations for Christmas so I wrap my presents beautifully and put plastic wrap and bows on my gift baskets and place them neatly on top of my bookcases for an extra splash of cheer.
Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Living Room for Christmas #2: Candles
If you have some sort of a mantle or even on the top of your entertainment cabinet, buy several candles in various colors and sizes from the Dollar store in Christmas colors. You don’t have to lit them if you’re afraid of something catching on fire. You can simply have them displayed as a decoration.
Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Living Room for Christmas #3: Rug
If you can swing it in your budget, buy a rug in green or red to spruce up your living room. You can look for one at a thrift store (be sure to go to several on your search) or Wal-Mart has some of the cheaper made rugs in a large size for $20 to $25 dollars.
Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Living Room for Christmas #4: Holiday Placemats
Placemats aren’t just for eating on. You can pick up festive holiday placemats from several retail and discount stores during the holiday season. Choose some that fit in with a theme you want to go with and place them on end tables, the coffee table and even hang some of the nicer ones on the wall. I found some placemats that are in the shape of a Santa head that I hand on my wall every year because they make a cute decoration in the living room and cost me less then a dollar.
Cheap Ways to Decorate Your Living Room for Christmas #5: Garland
Garland is one of those things that you can use to decorate almost anywhere. Use tacks, staplers or tape to attach garland to the top of picture frames, around the doorways in your living room, along your entertainment center or end tables. You don’t need a lot of garland in each area. Make sure that it molds the area you’re decorating and not overlapping. Overlapping makes it look more sloppy.
If you want other Christmas items, the dollar store is the best place to get bulk affordable items but also check Craigslist and Freecycle. You never know what goodies people will want to unload for free or very cheap that you can incorporate into your Christmas decorating.
