The Chicago Air and Water Show has been a staple of my summers ever since I can remember. I was born in Chicago, Illinois and have lived in the Chicago area all my life. As a kid, I can remember getting to the Chicago lakefront at the North Avenue Beach very early in the morning, so we could claim a good spot on the sand. The beach fills up very quickly on the mornings of the Chicago Air and Water Show.
Last year, in 2008, I attended the 50th Anniversary of the Chicago Air and Water Show. It was spectacular as usual, with military jets flying in precision formation and the sounds of the sonic booms filling the air, but this year, it was different. The excitement of the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Air and Water Show was in the air. By mid morning, North Avenue Beach was packed, so I’m glad we got there early enough to get a good spot. Just like we did in my youth! There seemed to be more spectators in 2008 than I remembered from shows in the past, probably due to the celebrities that would be participating in the event.
Bill Murray, Gary Sinise and Florence Henderson were there. I enjoy Gary Sinise, but the thought of seeing Carol Brady, was almost too much for me to bear. Bill Murray was amazing. At the age of 57 years young, he parachuted out of a plane, in tandem with Sgt. Joe Jones of the Golden Knights, which is the same Army team that President George H.W. Bush jumped with. After the jump, Bill Murray staggered around a little pretending he was so dizzy that he could barely walk. It was so funny and entertaining. Florence Henderson of the Brady Bunch fame sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. I’ve always admired Flo’s singing voice, but it was especially clear and rich sounding on that day. Gary Sinise also gave us a great performance with his band. Our local Chicago radio station was also at the beach broadcasting live. The precision, brilliant aircraft drills, the sights of sailboats and other water craft on magnificent Lake Michigan, the booming sounds of the flybys, the smell of jet fuel and the celebrity sightings was almost enough to make me cry! I will never forget the 2008 50th Anniversary of the Chicago Air and Water Show, and I wait in anticipation for the 2009 show. I’ll be there early.
