Christopher Creed is an interesting kid and can be seen in many different ways. At school kids considered him to be ‘weird’, but what they didn’t know, the way he acted around them could have been a cover up for something worse. At school, Chris was picked on my other kids for the way he acted. At home he was forced to live an abnormal way of living with his strict mother. In her earlier days, Mrs. Creed was in the air force, forcing her to be strict at home. The events that took place around school and other places caused Chris to disappear, probably from a ‘mental break down’.
After reading this novel no one knows whether Chris committed suicide or simply ran away, but either way he caused confusion, drama, and relationships to be destroyed. Renee’s family was separated because a secret slipped. If Chris never died that secret probably would have never been told. Another event that resulted in Chris’s disappearance is Torey getting hurt. If Torey never tried to find Chris his life would have been totally different. Whether Chris committed suicide or ran away, either way it shows what kind of person he is. It shows that he is willing to leave everything he knows and loves because there is emptiness inside of him.
The book isn’t just on what occurred after Chris leaving, but before as well. What made him disappear? Throughout the story it shows characters blaming others that they caused him to leave. Its not one person, not a few, the whole community. Everyone in the town, everyone he has known, caused him to be the person he is or was. “Where did that twerp get the nerve to take of”? This is what kids in the community said after they found out he was missing. You can just imagine how he felt.
The responses of a person can tell you a lot about them, whether they turn around and throw a punch or just ignore. How did Chris respond? In the book it tells how kids would hit hi for doing something they didn’t like. The next day he would show up and act like nothing had happened, just being himself. This shows that Creed was very strong mentally, but just couldn’t hold it in forever. “He used to hide some little book inside the back of a picture frame on his wall.” In this passage Ali is describing Chris’s diary. He would keep simple notes in it, which probably helped him along his life.
In the book Torey reads his diary. He reads that he has a girlfriend, for what Chris says. He visits Isabella, the girl, and asked her if they were dating. “You mean…as in a boyfriend-girlfriend thing”? She laughed “no”. Maybe Chris thought or lied in order to make him feel good.
“Some of you know already that the son of Ron and Sylvia Creed-Christopher Creed- disappeared from school on Thursday and hasn’t been seen since”. This is speaking by the pastor of the church as he tells all the members that Chris has gone missing. Obviously Chris was cared for, but maybe he didn’t know. “She was at school, hanging ‘missing’ posters all on the bulletin boards and taping them to the walls in the corridors”. Here it talks about his mom hanging posters, in hope to find her child. Maybe his mom was so tough on him he didn’t know, which could be a big reason he left. I think after the death of Christopher so many people had there fingers pointed that everyone looked at others differently then they really were.
Chris had many different personalities, it just depends whose eyes you were looking at them from. The fact that we don’t know whether Chris committed suicide or not leaves a big gap in the story, but you should never assume either way. Just like digger Haines if this ever happened, blaming others, it could lead to their death as well.
