Social Security recipients who have worked 40-some years and paid into the Social Security system, receive an average of about $13,800 per year. By comparison, Congressional salaries are $174,000 per year. That is a little over 12 times the amount that the American Senior, Social Security recipient receives.
The Congressional Elite receives an automatic Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA) of 0.028% each year, unless they specifically vote to not receive the increase. In 2009, with our economy on the skids and 100’s of thousands of American citizens out of work, with no hope of finding work, Congress DID NOT vote to stop their COLA increase. Based on Congress’ current yearly salary rate of $174,000, two months from now in January 2010, the Congressional ‘Big Wigs’ WILL receive their yearly salary increase of approximately $4,872, bringing their yearly income to about $178,872. The Congressional Elite get richer, while the American public gets poorer!
Now lets consider the American Senior, who has worked hard and paid into Social Security for all of their working life. The American Senior who has built this country, fought for this country’s freedom, and even now is being forced in some cases to eat the cheapest pet food available, because they can’t afford the rising costs of human food. The American Senior who has lost half, or more of their savings in supposedly ‘safe’ investments, because of greedy Wall Street bankers and bad investment managers. The Social Security Administration has stated “…40 percent of all single retirees depend on Social Security for 90 percent of their income.” At $13,800 per year, an individual Social Security recipient is only slightly over the government’s indicated poverty level of $10,400. Our American Seniors, whose primary means of support is Social Security, can not afford the steak and lobster dinners that the Congressional Elite think nothing of having on a daily basis.
Does the American Senior get a COLA increase in 2010? No! They get zip! Nada! Not a single copper-clad zinc cent. No expensive COLA increase for these hard working people. After all, a 0.028% increase in their yearly income would amount to $368 per year ($32 per month). Less than one tenth of the amount the Congressional Elite will receive.
Congress has voted to stop COLA increases for Social Security next year, and probably for the next three years, maybe longer. Have they also voted to stop Congress’ yearly COLA increase? Of course NOT! Congress can’t afford to increase Social Security AND keep their Congressional COLA increases AND pay out enormous sums to their Wall Street cronies AND bail out every other mismanaged ‘too big to fail’ business.
The current administration is too busy spending money that this country doesn’t have, on things that the majority of the American people do not want. 2010 is rapidly approaching. It’s time to vote these Progressive Jack Asses out of office and get someone with some financial sense in office. Someone who knows that they work for US American citizens and no one else. Someone who does NOT spend this country into oblivion. Someone who recognizes the contribution that our American Seniors have made and does not punish them for the sins of the greedy politicians and their equally greedy corporate supporters.
