The best thing about the college football bowl games are the match ups that we don’t normally get to see. Sometimes two programs are playing each other for the first time and in other bowl games teams are finally getting revenge for games they lost decades ago. These are the all-time win-loss records of each college football bowl match up.
New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State vs. Wyoming
Fresno State and Wyoming are deadlocked at three wins each. Fresno State and Wyoming faced each other every year from 1992 to 1997. Fresno State won in 1992, 1994 and 1997. Wyoming won in 1993, 1995 and 1996.
St. Petersburg Bowl: UCF vs. Rutgers
This will be the first ever meeting between Central Florida and Rutgers.
New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss vs. Mid Tenn State
Southern Miss and Mid Tenn State also have never faced each other before this year’s New Orleans Bowl.
Las Vegas Bowl: Oregon State vs. BYU
Oregon State and BYU have met eight times over the past 25 years. The first meeting came in 1955 when Oregon State won 33 – 0. In 1961 they won easily again with a 35 – 0 score. The last six games they’ve swapped wins but Oregon State leads the overall match up 5 to 3.
Poinsettia Bowl: Utah vs. California
The first meeting between Utah and California goes all the way back to 1920 when California won 63 – 0 on their way to a 9 – 0 season. They didn’t meet again until 1958 when California won again. California also won in 1963 and 2000 but Utah has won twice in 1964 and 2003. California leads the series 4 to 2.
Hawaii Bowl: Nevada vs. SMU
Nevada and SMU played each other every season from 2000 to 2004. SMU won the first and last meeting but Nevada won the three meetings in between to give them a 3 to 2 series lead.
Little Caesars Bowl: Marshall vs. Ohio
Marshall and Ohio have faced each other 24 times. Marshall has dominated the series lately by winning the last four meetings from 2001 to 2004 but Ohio still leads the overall series 10 to 14.
Car Care Bowl: Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina
The Car Care Bowl will be the seventh meeting between Pittsburgh and North Carolina. Through the first six meetings North Carolina has won 4 times and Pittsburgh has won twice.
Emerald Bowl: Boston College vs. USC
Boston College and USC have played each other just twice and USC won both games. The first was a 23 – 17 victory in 1987 and the other was a 34 – 7 win in 1988.
Music City Bowl: Kentucky vs. Clemson
The last time Kentucky and Clemson played was three years ago in the same bowl game. Kentucky was victorious 28 – 20. Overall Kentucky leads the series 8 to 4.
Independence Bowl: Texas A&M vs. Georgia
Georgia stomped Texas A&M 42 – 0 the last time they played back in 1980 but Texas A&M has won their other three meetings.
Champs Sports Bowl: Miami vs. Wisconsin
This will be the fourth game between Miami and Wisconsin. Wisconsin won their first meeting in 1958 but Miami was victorious in 1988 and 1989.
Humanitarian Bowl: Bowling Green vs. Idaho
This will be the first ever meeting between Bowling Green and Idaho.
Holiday Bowl: Arizona vs. Nebraska
Arizona and Nebraska have played just twice but Arizona holds the series lead with a 23 – 20 win in the Holiday Bowl back in 1998. Their other meeting, back in 1961, ended in a 14 – 14 tie.
Armed Forces Bowl: Houston vs. Air Force
Houston and Air Force have played twice and it happened in the same year, last year. Air Force defeated Houston in the regular season 31 – 28. They played again in the Armed Forces Bowl last year and this time Houston won 34 – 28.
Sun Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Stanford
Oklahoma and Stanford have faced each other four times in the past. The series began with a 35 – 29 victory by Oklahoma in 1987. Two years later Stanford would get revenge but Nebraska won in 1983 and 1984 to give them a 3 to 1 series lead.
Texas Bowl: Navy vs. Missouri
Navy has faced Missouri twice and has failed to beat them yet. Missouri won the first meeting in 1948 and then defeated Navy again in the 1961 Orange Bowl.
Insight Bowl: Minnesota vs. Iowa State
Minnesota and Iowa State have done battle 25 times. The Series has been dominated by Minnesota who has won 22 times and tied once. Iowa State’s two victories against Minnesota came all the way back in 1896 and 1897.
Chick-fil-a Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee
Tennessee has a 3 to 1 series lead over Virginia Tech. In their last meeting Peyton Manning lead the Volunteers to a 45 – 23 win over the Hokies in the 1994 Gator Bowl.
Outback Bowl: Northwestern vs. Auburn
Northwestern and Auburn have never faced each other before.
Capital One Bowl: Penn State vs. LSU
Penn State and LSU have storied college football programs but they only faced once before. LSU would score on their first drive and the defense held Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti to just 50 yards but Penn State would still win 16 – 9.
Gator Bowl: West Virginia vs. Florida State
This will be the third match up between West Virginia and Florida State and all three have happened at the Gator Bowl. They first met in 1982 when Bobby Bowden, a former West Virginia coach, led the Seminoles to a 31 – 12 win. In 2005 Florida State would win again, this time 30 – 18.
Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon
Ohio State faced Oregon seven times between 1955 and 1987 and so far the Buckeyes are 7 – 0 against the Ducks. The only time they faced in the Rose Bowl was a 10 – 7 win for Ohio State back in 1958.
Sugar Bowl: Florida vs. Cincinnati
Cincinnati and Florida faced just once time. In 1984 the Florida Gators defeated the Bearcats 48 – 17.
International Bowl: South Florida vs. Northern Illinois
South Florida and Northern Illinois played each other back in 2001 and 2002. They split the first two meetings so this will be the rubber game.

South Carolina and Connecticut have never played each other before.
Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss
The last and only meeting between Oklahoma State and Ole Miss was also in the Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss would defeat Oklahoma State 31 – 28 in the 2004 Cotton Bowl.
Liberty Bowl: Arkansas Razorbacks vs. East Carolina
This will be the first game between the Arkansas Razorbacks and East Carolina Pirates.
Alamo Bowl: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech
Michigan State and Texas Tech have never faced each other.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. TCU
Boise State and TCU’s only other meetings were also in bowl games. The first meeting came in 2003 when Boise State defeated TCU in the Fort Worth Bowl. They played again just last season and this time TCU defeated Boise State 17 – 16 in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Orange Bowl: Iowa vs. Georgia Tech
This will be the first ever meeting between Iowa and Georgia Tech.
GMAC Bowl: Central Michigan vs. Troy
Central Michigan and Troy will meet each other for the first time.
National Championship Game: Texas vs. Alabama
If history is any indication then bad news for the Crimson Tide. Texas and Alabama have faced each other 8 times in the past and Texas has never lost. The first three meetings came in regular season encounters in 1902, 1915 and 1922. Texas also defeated Alabama in the 1948 Sugar Bowl. In 1960 Texas and Alabama tied in the Bluebonnet Bowl. After that Texas defeated Alabama again in the 1965 Orange Bowl, the 1973 Cotton Bowl and the 1982 Cotton Bowl.
