Core, a Nightwolf Gaming production, is a new twist on the top down shooter genre. Most top down shooters will have you blasting through hordes of enemies or traveling through space fighting space ships, such is not the case is Core. In core you play a space ship designed to do one thing, fight mutating cells. The ship revolves around the center as a cellular mass mutates and grows and your job is to stunt it’s growth and eventually kill it. As you circle the blob trying to trim off the cells it refuses to slow on the other sides. Are you master of the blob? Play core to find out!
The graphics in Core are not bad, they are not stunning, but they are definitely not bad. They set a retro arcade game theme with the pixel design ,which works well for the game. I really like the “blob” effects in Core they look pretty good. As in how to blob grows and the little chunks that break off when you shoot it. Overall I give the graphics in blob in blob a 17/25. They looked nice for the theme but probably could used some more detail and variation.
The sounds in Core are seem to be lacking. The music is there but after a few minutes it getting annoying, and the sound effects like shooting and blob noises are so low you can’t hear them over the background music. Maybe a quick adjustment to that might make it better. A soundtrack might work better to with a few songs the switch because that one was starting to get annoying. Overall I’d give the sounds in Core a 13/25, because they were there but I couldn’t hear them and it got annoying fast only listening to the same song over and over.
The game play in Core is what really sets it apart from the crowd. It has a unique center objective that you rotate around as you move up/down/left/right. Your goal is to use the weapons available to trim down the cell mass till you can shoot at its core. Despite being rather easy Core is a fun little arcade worth giving a try. After a while it seems to get repetitive so many additional features in the future would expand the life of the game. Maybe the addition of some more upgrades, maybe deadlier attacks like the blob fires goop at you, different scenery, maybe ship upgrades? Overall I give Core a 20/25 in game play because it was fun and unique just needs a little more content.
There is no story line in Core but for an arcade game it’s not to be expected.
The interface in core works well with the pixel theme. It looks good and it does the job it requires. The only thing I could think to add is maybe a spot that shows upgrades you have to use.
I think Core has a lot of potential so far as a W.I.P. With just a few slight changes and some more content I think that this could be a great game. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Core and will keep checking back constantly.
