Your home-based gift basket business will thrive and prosper provided your mission statement is to make each basket with love. Rather than focusing on how much money you will make, put your attention on that big smile on your recipient’s face when you deliver their bedazzling Romance Basket.
In my previous tutorial, Gift Baskets are a Fun and Profitable Home-Based Business, you learned how to set up your business along with several special secrets of the gift basket trade. Now, we will assemble your first sample gift basket, which you will show to potential customers.
Step One – Purchase or Gather Supplies
Here are suggested items to include in a romance gift basket:
A pretty bottle containing a non-alcoholic sparkling beverage
Two crystal candle holders, two taper candles, two crystal wine glasses
Gaily-wrapped packages of gourmet snacks, such as Brie, pepperoni sausage, crackers, small jar of fancy mustard and exquisite dark chocolate. Keep chocolate candy kisses on hand to fill in blank spaces in the basket
A medium to large stuffed bear, depending on basket size
A handled basket large enough to accommodate the bear, beverage and romantic items
Filler such as newspaper, your signature color of shred, cello wrap
Curling ribbon and/or a pre-made bow in your complementary color
Scissors and a gift card
Step Two – Assembly
Stuff the basket about ¾ full using shredded or crumpled newspaper
Layer with sufficient shred to cover newspaper
Snuggle the bear’s backside against the handle
Position the beverage so that it appears the bear is holding it between its paws
Place one of the candle holders, wine glasses and candles on either side of the bear
Arrange pre-packaged food until most empty space is filled. Note: Some states will not permit resale of home baked goodies unless you have a catering license.
Sprinkle chocolate kisses where any shred is showing
Step Three – Wrapping it up
Here is the most difficult challenge, which gets easier with practice.
Never skimp on the cello wrap. It is better to waste a little cello wrap than to produce a tacky gift basket.
Put the basket in the middle of cello wrap. Keep scooting the basket down the right side of the wrap and pulling it up over the basket until there are about six to eight excess inches on each side of the handle. Gather the wrap close to the handle and twist it tight. Tie a knot with a small piece of curling ribbon to secure.
I wrapped my gift baskets differently from most, by pleating the cello wrap and leaving an opening on both sides to expose the contents. It’s a tactile thing. Customers love touching the contents before purchasing!
Now fluff the excess cello wrap at the top of gift basket.
With your first attempts, it’s hard to hold the twisted wrap while you tie the curling ribbon in a secure knot. You can clamp one end of the curling ribbon with your teeth and manage to tie the knot or enlist a helper for this step. Cut eight pieces of curling ribbon about two-feet long and tie them where they will cover the small piece, which is securing the cello wrap. After curling the ribbon, either finish with a pretty bow in your complementary color or just leave as is. If you decide not to add the bow, repeat the curling ribbon process so that your finished product won’t appear skimpy.
Next, handwrite the personalized card, punch a hole in the upper left corner of the card and affix it to basket with curling ribbon.
Your sample wares must remain crisp. Rewrap the Romance Basket when the cello wrap starts to flop over like bunny ears. For a classy finishing touch, affix a gold sticky label with your business name and telephone number somewhere conspicuous on the cello wrap.
You have now created a basic Romance Basket, which you can use as a model, to build on and add items according to sales price. Often, the customer will request specific items. (Remember your Personal Shopping service.)
My Romance Baskets ranged anywhere from $200 to $800. Higher-end Romance Baskets may include luxurious items such as, Belgium lace tablecloth, silverware, perfume, jewelry, scented lotions and bath oils and/or lingerie. Gorgeous gift baskets are gems and each sale will add to your treasure trove. Make Romance Baskets, with love, and they will serve as your diamonds – forever resonating in the heart and mind of your customer.
