Homemade photo Christmas cards are a great alternative to sending traditional boxed cards. With a digital camera, a computer and a few programs homemade Christmas cards open up creative options for making and sending Christmas cards.
Only Have a Digital Camera Option for Making Homemade Photo Christmas Cards
If you only have access to a digital camera you can still make homemade photo Christmas cards. With your camera take a picture of your family. AC contributors Lindsey Price and Rae Edwards offer suggestions on How to Take the Perfect Holiday Card Photo. Their number one point is to consider the setting. They also discuss timing, clothing, lighting and angles.
Once you have a digital picture that you want to use to make a photo Christmas card you can take your memory card to your local Walgreens or Walmart stores and use their photo kiosks. There are many other stores that have photo kiosks as well. To use these stations, you upload your picture by following the directions on the screen. You will be given an option to modify your picture. With this option you may be able to adjust for some lighting issues and crop the image. Once you have your picture edited there will be options on how to print or order the pictures. One of those options includes making a holiday type postcard. Place your order and then wait for the pictures to be processed.
Making Homemade Photo Christmas Cards using a Digital Camera and a Computer
If you have a computer and online access the options for making homemade photo Christmas cards increases significantly. Following are only a few of the many options.
After you have uploaded your image onto your computer, you may want to adjust a few things like the intensity of the colors, the lighting or the size of the image or remove red eyes. A good and easy to use program is called Irfanview and it is available as a free download. Photoshop is another great program for creating unique photos. However, Photoshop is expensive and not everyone has access to this program. Another free download to help with organizing and adjusting photos is Photo Tool Kit.
If you have Microsoft Office Publisher installed on your computer, you can then open Publisher and insert your Christmas photo into one of several Christmas card templates. Then all you have to do is personalize, print, fold and send.
Online Options for Making Photo Christmas Cards
Online, you can download photo card making programs. These offer a variety of templates and will save the photo card as a jpeg picture file which you can then either print yourself or take to the photo kiosks or photo development centers and print.
PhotoCard: Easy to download, install and use. Limited templates for holiday photos but has option to import your own templates.
PhotoPosPro: Is a photo editor which also includes options to make greeting cards, business cards and more.
Another alternative if you don’t want to download or use special programs for editing is to use an online site that has a database of templates and designs for creating cards. These will not be free but as long as you have a picture you like it will be relatively easy. Snapfish, Photoworks and Shutterfly are three sites that allow you to upload your picture to create a homemade photo Christmas card.
