Flat Irons or straightening irons are probably the number one thermal hair styling appliance in use. It seems that every time straight styles are discussed or advertised they are achieved with the aid of one of these irons. However, flat irons can do more for the hair besides providing straight as an arrow locks. Flat irons can also be used to add curl to the hair. Discover a few hair curling tricks that can be achieved with the flat iron.
Creating Loose Curls
Sexy loose curls are easily achieved with a flat iron. A flat iron is best for two reasons:
- It straightens and smoothes the hair eliminating frizz
- It adds curl with volume
The process is quick and easy. Take a section of hair and starting an inch away from your roots; slowly slide the flat iron down towards your ends. Keeping the iron positioned on your ends, begin to roll the iron toward your scalp stopping an inch away. In quick movements open and shut the iron plates as you disengage the flat iron from your hair. Take a bobby pin and secure the curl to the root of hair. Repeat until all sections are curled and pinned. Lightly mist hair with a finishing spray that provides hold and shine. Allow the spray to dry and set for five minutes. Remove the pins from your hair and finger style as you see fit. Finger styling is key to keeping the amount of curl you desire and to maintain volume. Combing will remove curl and make hair flat. If more hold is needed, mist hair with additional finishing spray.
Flat irons are also great for just curling the ends of the hair to achieve looks like the classic bob. Take a section of hair and smooth the hair first by sliding the flat iron down the section just as you would for curling your hair with the iron. Leaving the flat iron on the ends roll the iron under the hair 1 – 3 turns depending on the length of hair and how much curl is desired at the ends. Release the plates open and disengage the iron from the hair. Repeat the process for the remaining sections of hair. Using a round brush, brush the underside of the hair following the curve of the curl to soften it a bit. If you prefer a harder look for the curl, style with your fingers.
Flipped out ends are still a fashionable hair style that is both fun and flirty. Simply smooth a section of your hair out with the flat iron starting an inch from the root and ending at the tip of your hair. Leaving the flat iron at your ends roll your hair outward (away from you) 1 – 3 times depending on the intensity of the flip you desire. Repeat for the rest of your hair. Take a round brush and brush through your hair following the pattern of the curl. For extra hold keep your ends rolled around the brush and spritz with a finishing spray. Hold for a minute and remove brush from your hair. You can also finger style or use a comb depending on how much of a flip you desire.
As you can see a flat iron has many styling capabilities beyond straightening the hair. Try these techniques out for yourself or experiment and discover your own. As always, share your experiences with other to help keep the world beautiful!
