The show opened with a redo of the exhilarating Team Tango from last night’s competition. With just twelve points separating the top and bottom of the leader board, the elimination promises to be dramatic.
A recap of the stars’ performances and scores highlighted the best numbers, the worst missteps and even the antics of the judges. The stars were all aware that any one of them could be facing the dance off.
Seven couples stood in limbo as hosts Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris announced that Kelly Osbourne and Louie Van Amstel were the first couple. Mark DaCascos and Lacey Schwimmer were the first pair to learn they are in the bottom three.
Colby Calais sang her song her hit Falling for You while Edyta and Alex danced. Then Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson learned they had made it to next week while Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova found themselves in the bottom three.
Ballas/Hough, a band featuring Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, two of the professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars, performed next. They sang a song from their upcoming album, Watch Your Body. Next the stars talked about the rules of the competition and the determination it takes to go all the way.
Mya and Dmitry and Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough felt relief wash over them as they learned they were safe, placing Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff in the last of the slots at the bottom three. The couple with the lowest overall score was sent home and the other two had to dance a face-off.
Rod Stewart took the stage for It’s the Same Old Song. This brought us to t moment of the truth. Michael Irvin was sent home without a chance to redeem himself. Tom Bergeron praised Irvin’s leadership during the past week’s team practices.
Mark and Lacey stepped on the dance floor first with a Cha Cha Cha to Move It. Len called it clean, sharp and rhythmic. Bruno said Mark had more tricks than Heidi Fleiss. Carrie Ann felt Mark was in top form since being back with his usual partner.
Aaron and Karina sold a convincing jive that was excellent. This jive was better than his performance last night. All three judges were exultant and could barely control their enthusiasm. Aaron has found his calling on the dance floor with the jive.
Based solely on the decision of the judges, Aaron and Karina were saved while Mark and Lacey were eliminated. Mark called it one of the greatest experiences of his life.
With just five couples left, next week the couples will have to learn two individual dances.
