Dandruff Shampoo Comparisons

by sawpan

For many people, winter means the onset of dandruff. Dandruff is a dry, flaking and itching scalp that is often first noticed by small white flakes that appear on a person’s shoulders, combs and brushes. Dandruff sufferers can get relief by using one of the leading over-the-counter dandruff shampoos. Selsun Blue and Head & Shoulders have both been available to consumers as anti-dandruff shampoos for years. Because they contain different active ingredients, consumers may find that one shampoo works better at controlling their dandruff than the other.

Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo

Medicated Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo contains selenium sulfide, an anti-dandruff ingredient. According to the package label, it works by relieving the symptoms of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis and preventing their recurrence. The label also says that Selsun Blue is recommended by doctors for effective dandruff control.

The directions state that the user can shampoo with Selsun Blue at least once or twice a week. Many dandruff sufferers find that this is adequate and can use their regular shampoo on alternate days.

Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo comes in different formulations. There is Selsun Blue for Itchy, Dry Scalp, Selsun Blue Naturals, Selsun Salon and the original Selsun Blue formula.

Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo can be purchased at most department and drug stores.

Head & Shoulders Dandruff Shampoo

Head & Shoulders markets ten different collections of dandruff shampoo and conditioner. These collections include classic clean, dry scalp care, restoring shine and severe dandruff formulations.

The active ingredient in most Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoos is pyrithione zinc. It’s interesting to note that Head & Shoulders severe dandruff formula contains selenium sulfide, which is the same active ingredient that is in the Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo.

Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoo recommends that the product be used with every shampoo for best results. The label further states that the product should be used at least twice a week for dandruff control. Like Selsun Blue, Head & Shoulders shampoo is available at most department and drug stores.

Both Selsun Blue and Head & Shoulders are more expensive than regular shampoos, but for those that deal with dandruff, the benefits far outweigh the cost. To reduce the cost, look for sales and coupons. The Head & Shoulders website offers a free sample to consumers who are willing to sign up for the P&G Everyday Solutions mailing list. E-mail sign-ups can be done directly through the Head & Shoulders website.

Dandruff can be an embarrassing condition, but it is easily treated with either one of these established dandruff shampoos. Both Selsun Blue and Head & Shoulders provide effective relief from dandruff.
