‘Dexter’ Season 4 Episode 10 ‘Lost Boys’ ups the stakes in Dexter’s cat and mouse game with Arthur Mitchell, aka Trinity. Trinity has taken a ten year old boy and clearly intends to do evil to him. The pattern has started again.
Spoilers surely follow.
It appears that Trinity is not an exactly accurate name for Arthur Mitchell. The late Special Agent Frank Lundy missed part of the pattern. Trinity likes to kill four people in his cycle of death. Besides a young girl for his sister, an older woman for his mother, and a man for his father, Trinity takes a young boy to represent him.
The bitterest of ironies is that Dexter, in showing forbearance in ending Trinity, has placed an innocent boy in peril. Dexter, who is supposed to feel very little, feels this keenly. He is a father now and with a father’s sense of protectiveness.
In a way it is fortunate that the ten year old Scott is likely naïve about the ways of psychopathic killers. Otherwise he would have been horrified out of his mind at Trinity calling him “Arthur” and yammering about preserving his innocence. As it is, being locked in a room with such a person, playing with a toy train set, was not very fun filled.
Dexter had not the luxury of innocence. He knew almost straight away what Trinity was up to and why. He also knew why Lundy had missed the part of the pattern. None of the bodies of the kids had been found; they were all open missing person cases. There is, as it turns out, a horrifying reason why this is so.
Dexter has another problem. Trinity knows that he himself is hunted, though he thinks it is by his old friend “Kyle.”
And there is yet another complication. Trinity has wrecked yet another life in his sick, twisted pattern of death. It seems that years ago, when she was five, another daughter saw daddy naked in the bath tub with an exsanguinated girl. Instead of fleeing in horror, the girl clearly demonstrated that she inherited some of daddy’s craziness.
The five year old girl became an impetuous girl reporter who turned out to be very protective of daddy indeed. She was the one who shot Lundy and Debra for getting too close. Unfortunately Debra was left alive and she was finally able to put two and two together. And now the girl reporter must go with Debra, Angel, and a very disappointed Quinn.
Will she give up Trinity before Dexter can get to him? It’s going to be nip and tuck. Dexter manages to snatch ten year old Scott before Trinity can make him a permanent part of the foundation of a newly built home. Unfortunately Trinity gets away and since there are two more episodes left in this season of ‘Dexter’ that development is going to put Dexter and his beloved family in great peril indeed.
