DiGiorno “rising crust” frozen pizza made it’s way onto the market in 1995, and it quickly became the frozen pizza of choice for our family. Other brands have tried to copy the DiGiorno rising crust model, but in my opinion, none of them have matched the taste or quality of DiGiorno.
DiGiorno has snatched one third of the market share for frozen pizza, and their sales have hit the one billion dollar mark. The company hopes to grab an even bigger share of consumer dollars with their newest frozen pizza, the Ultimate Pizza.
I didn’t even know that DiGiorno had a new pizza to offer, until one day I was shopping at my local Sam’s Club warehouse store, and they were giving away generous sized samples. The version that the store was promoting was the DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza. I was sold at first bite!
My husband and I felt this new version of DiGiorno pizza was really something special, and even though their original rizing crust pizza tasted more like take out pizza than any other frozen pizza we had ever eaten, we both felt that the DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza captured that taste even better.
DiGiorno Ultimate pizza comes in four different varieties, (1) Ultimate Four Cheese, (2) Ultimate Pepperoni, (3) Ultimate Four Meat, and (4) Ultimate Supreme. The Ultimate Supreme is topped with Italian sausage, large cut pepperoni, mushrooms, and julienne strips of red onion, green and red pepper.
DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza comes in a box that looks similar to the former Digiorno frozen pizza, and calls itself “Oven Fresh Pizzeria Pizza”. Made by Kraft Foods, this pizza is ultimate because of the high quality ingredients that are used! They use “proprietary dough”, fresh tomatoes ripened on the vine, mozzarella that is made from whole milk instead of part skim, thin strips of veggies, and specialty meats. I think that Kraft is getting away from their well known “rising crust pizza” that made them a success, and are now gearing toward the “pizzeria-style crust”.
I have never seen sausage on a pizza like what I enjoy with the DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza. It is thickly sliced, and presents like pepperoni, only it’s sausage! The crust and savory spices do have a different taste when compared to the original DiGiorno, and I was immediately impressed with the texture, flavor and overall taste of this pizza. It certainly does not taste like your average frozen pizza.
The DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza comes in boxes containing two pizzas, and retails for around $15.00, making each pizza only $7.50 each, which is quite amazing. The last time we ordered a medium take out pizza from a local Italian restaurant, we paid $20 (yes, for a medium size!). I would say that the DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza is about equivalent to the size of a medium restaurant pizza, measuring 10-12 inches in diameter. The price can’t be beat. DiGiorno Ultimate Pizzas weigh from 22.9 ounces to 26.4 ounces, and serve up 320 to 370 calories per slice, as well as 14 to 19 grams of total fat. As fattening as it is, it’s hard to eat just one piece!
Flavors of this pizza are not too spicy, and they blend perfectly together with the gentle taste of the crust. Now that we have tasted the new DiGiorno Ultimate Supreme Pizza, I really doubt that we will be purchasing any other types of frozen pizza for our family. They are a great product to have in the freezer for when those unexpected guests come by to catch that sports show with us on cable TV. I feel like I am serving them pizza that tastes as good as take out, at a fraction of the cost. This pizza is definitely a winner.
