Over the past couple of months, Tommy Dreamer, the last ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) original, has enjoyed the spotlight as a part of the ECW Title picture. As the last ECW original, Dreamer is the only remaining link between the revolutionary ECW promotion of the 1990s and the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) branded ECW. For wrestling fans who want to experience the original ECW, the WWE has released some excellent DVDs filled with matches from, and footage of, the original ECW. Any of the following WWE releases will give insight to the revolution that was Extreme Championship Wrestling.
The Rise & Fall of ECW
The Rise & Fall of ECW is one of the WWE’s most popular releases and a must buy for the documentary. Throughout the documentary you will hear from many people who were essential to Extreme Championship Wrestling. Key interviews include Paul Heyman, Tommy Dreamer, The Dudley Boys (now known as Team 3D in TNA Wrestling), Tazz, and Rob Van Dam. Other interesting commentary comes from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and former WCW executive Eric Bischoff. The Rise & Fall of ECW also contains seven matches including the final showdown between Tommy Dreamer and Raven from Wrestlepalooza 97. Dreamer/Raven was the biggest rivalry in ECW history.
Bloodsport: ECW’s Most Violent Matches
In 2000, ECW owner Paul Heyman reached a deal with Pioneer Entertainment to start distributing ECW DVDs. A total of 12 Extreme Championship Wrestling DVDs were released in the United States. They contained some of the most memorable matches in the history of the original ECW. However, those DVDs are now out of print making them very hard to come by. Luckily, the WWE released Bloodsport: ECW’s Most Violent Matches. The match listing for Bloodsport: ECW’s Most Violent Matches reads as a best of the best from the Pioneer DVDs.
Some of these noteworthy wrestling matches includes Rob Van Dam versus Sabu in a stretcher match (1996), a four way for the ECW TV Title between Chris Jericho, 2 Cold Scorpio, Pitbull #2 and Shane Douglas (1996), a three way between The Sandman, Stevie Richards, and Terry Funk from ECW’s first PPV Barely Legal (1997), and the much talked about Sabu/Terry Funk barbwire match from Born to be Wired 1997.
Rob Van Dam- One of a Kind
This WWE release is a two disc set. The first disc is full of Rob Van Dam’s ECW wrestling matches. Many consider Rob Van Dam ECW’s last big draw and you will understand why after watching this DVD. Standout matches include Rob Van Dam & Sabu versus The Eliminators for the ECW Tag Team Titles from ECW Crossing the Line Again (1997), Rob Van Dam versus Bam Bam Bigelow for the ECW TV Title from an episode of Hardcore TV (1998), and Rob Van Dam versus Jerry Lynn for the ECW TV Title from Living Dangerously ’99.
