Halloween is nearly here so it’s time to start brainstorming some creative costume ideas for the kids or that special Halloween party you are hoping to get invited to. Disney Halloween costumes always maintain as a favorite, whose characters rarely go out of popularity and style. One great Disney Halloween costume idea choice for you could be Disney’s Buzz Lightyear character from the hit Toy Story movies and self titled cartoon serial. The brilliant thing with doing up a Buzz Lightyear costume is that it is extremely easy and inexpensive to fashion and you’ll still wind up with a convincible Disney Halloween costume.
You’ll need some basic clothing. Get a long sleeved t-shirt and sweat pants, both need to be plain without graphics and white color. Also get a purple colored open faced ski hood or mask which should be available rather easily this time of year. If you can only find a full faced ski mask, that is fine as it can be easily modded which I’ll detail later in this guide. Lastly you’ll need some white shoes or boots if you want to go all out. But the footwear is optional.
Next you’ll need to cruise by a craft and / or fabric store. You’re going to want to get a square yard or two of a medium or light green colored fabric, and a single square yard of black and purple fabric. You should look for an inexpensive fabric with a satin like sheen that will be easy to glue onto other fabric later. Speaking of which, make sure you grab a bottle of fabric glue while you’re at it.
With all of that in hand, now we’re ready to actually make the costume.
What you should do before you go cutting and painting anything is find a good picture or two of Buzz Lightyear on an internet search engine such as Google to print out as a design reference for the costume. Print out a picture of both his front and back.
Now with those reference photos in hand you should feel rather confident about trimming out some patterns from the fabric you obtained from the craft or fabric store. The patterns are all very simple to make as they are mostly just long strips that will loop around various body parts like a stripe
For the white t-shirt you will want to cut the following shapes out from the fabric. Cut out a pair of green stripes to go around the forearms of the white long sleeved t-shirt. Then trim a couple of black stripes which will wrap around the shoulders and under the armpits on that same t-shirt. Lastly for the t-shirt cut out a thinker black stripe for the abdomen area, and then a green rectangular shaped patch that will be placed on the upper chest just below the neckline of the t-shirt, and will go down to about the middle of the costume wearer’s sternum. Line up these patterns on the t-shirt to make sure everything looks good. Also note that there should be a small patch of white between the black abdomen stripe and the green chest patch. Once everything looks good, glue them to the t-shirt with that fabric glue.
For the white sweatpants you will need to cut out green strips to fit around the waistband and the bottom of each pants leg. The last step for the pants will involve a bit of tracing. You’ll need to cut out a green kneepad pattern to glue to each knee on the sweatpants. Again, place your patterns on the sweat pants to check for any needed alterations, then glue them when certain everything looks good and will fit the costume wearer comfortably.
Now if you got a full faced ski mask, all you need to do is cut out a circular pattern so the costume wearer’s whole face to be exposed up to their hairline.
There are a couple of options that you can consider adding to your Buzz Lightyear costume as well! You could construct a jetpack out of a cardboard box, a pair of cardboard tubes from gift wrap dispensers, and box flaps for wings. Buzz is also known to carry some laser blasters on his wrists. These could easily be fashioned out of some small rectangular boxes attached to a pair of wristbands.
And last but not least don’t forget some elements for safety to add to your new Buzz Lightyear Halloween costume. Some reflective tape could be easily added to this costume as additional graphics as well as some LED battery powered lights.
Viola! Now you should have a really cool looking Disney’s Buzz Lightyear Halloween costume! Have a lot of fun with it. If you take your time with this one your latest Halloween getup will be sure to impress!
