You’ve returned from your family vacation and it’s back to the old routine for you and the kids. Wish you could relive those memorable vacation moments? You can! This easy vacation souvenir craft project for kids will allow you and your children to relive the fun events of your family vacation as you do the project together and each time your child wears his or her vacation souvenir T-shirt. This easy souvenir craft project is also a great way for kids to “show and tell” everyone at school about their family vacation. Here’s how to make a family vacation souvenir for kids that’s much nicer than one you could buy at any souvenir shop…
For this vacation souvenir photo shirt craft project, you will need:
favorite summer photos
a computer and printer (with photo editing/printing software)
iron-on transfer printing paper (be sure to choose the right kind for your printer and the color T-shirt you have chosen – there’s ink-jet transfer paper and laser transfer paper, as well as transfer paper for light fabric and dark fabric)
an iron and ironing board
To make the vacation souvenir photo T-shirt:
Sit down with the kids and collect favorite vacation photos. Choose about six photos that can be arranged two across (so that there are three “rows” of photos and two “columns” of photos). You can choose more or less photos to suit your fancy, but the design will look best if it is not cluttered and, of course, you and the kids will want to capture all the vacation highlights. If you don’t have digital versions of the photos, you’ll need to scan them to your computer or to a CD (or have a photo lab burn a CD of your film images).
Crop and edit the vacation photos as desired. Work with the kids to design a title caption for the vacation souvenir photo shirt (for example, “Jones Family Vacation – Myrtle Beach – 2009”), add colored frames around the photos and design captions that can be placed in text boxes next to the photos, and arrange them in an attractive template. You can use photo editing or scrapbooking software to design this template or simply use a word-processing program such as Microsoft Word.
Once you and the kids have designed the template for the vacation souvenir photo T-shirt, print a test copy out on plain white paper. Make adjustments to the design as needed. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, follow the manufacturer’s directions to print the design on the transfer paper.
Once the template for the vacation souvenir photo T-shirt has been printed, transfer the design to the T-shirt. Note that the transfer paper will appear white in areas that do not have photos or captions. This will look fine on a white T-shirt. If you’re using a colored t-shirt, you’ll probably want to have the kids cut out the photos and captions to transfer individually to the t-shirt. Arrange the photos on the T-shirt. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to transfer the design to the t-shirt with an iron.
Kids will enjoy reliving vacation memories when they wear this souvenir craft project over and over again. Even better, each time they wear their vacation souvenir t-shirt, they will remember the fun they had making this craft project with you.
