Thanksgiving craft projects are a fun, yet inexpensive, family activity and a way for children to take part in preparing the home for the family Thanksgiving celebration. These paper cup Thanksgiving turkeys are an easy Thanksgiving craft project for children. Have the children make a bunch of these paper cup Thanksgiving turkeys to use as place card holders for your family’s Thanksgiving dinner!
To make this paper cup Thanksgiving turkey craft project, you will need…
a paper cup (about an 8 ounce cup)
craft paint in autumn colors (brown, orange, red, yellow, etc.)
a large brown pom-pom for turkey head
a small red foam or felt heart for turkey gobbler
a small orange or yellow foam or felt triangle for turkey beak
2 small googly eyes
one small piece of orange construction paper
one sheet of white construction paper
To make this paper cup Thanksgiving turkey craft…
Have the children place the paper cup upside down on work surface and paint it brown with the craft paint. This will be the “body” of the paper cup Thanksgiving turkey (the bottom of the cup is the “top” of the turkey, the open top of the cup is the “bottom” of the turkey).
To make the Thanksgiving turkey feathers, have the children paint the white paper with several fall colors, crisscrossing and swirling the colors as they wish. Let the paint dry, then cut feathers for the Thanksgiving turkey out in one large piece (the easiest way to do this is have the children trace their hands). Cut the tips of each feather into a point (young children may need help with this).
Have the children apply craft glue to the bottom portion of the feathers (the palm of the hand) and press onto the back of the paper cup. Hold the feathers in place for a minute in order for the craft glue to set (or you could staple it).
Next, the children should place the foam or felt heart upside down on the work surface. Use the craft glue to attach the foam or felt triangle (point down) to the upside down heart – the upper points of the triangle will be hanging over the edge of the heart and the “top” of the triangle will be a flat edge. This is the beak and gobbler of the paper cup Thanksgiving turkey.
Have the children assemble the parts of their paper cup Thanksgiving turkey. Use the craft glue to attach the pom-pom turkey head to the top of the paper cup. Glue the googly eyes and the beak and gobbler to the head of the Thanksgiving turkey.
Craft two turkey feet from the orange paper. An easy way to do this is to cut two small triangles, and then cut a zigzag edge on one edge so there are three points for “toes” (young children may need help with this). Use the craft glue to attach the feet to the bottom of the paper cup Thanksgiving turkey.
To save time and/or mess, the children can cut turkey feathers from brown, orange, yellow, or red construction paper.
To turn the paper cup turkeys into Thanksgiving place cards, attach a small piece of white paper to the front of the each paper cup turkey with craft glue. Have the children write the name of a Thanksgiving dinner guest on each turkey.
