Rosemary Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy, Jean Kennedy, Sargent Shriver, Maria Shriver, and the rest of the Kennedy family all made headlines today. The Kennedy family, which seems to be plagued with tragedy after tragedy, is mourning the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away at the age of 88. Eunice Kennedy Shriver lived a long and prosperous life, and her death – while very sad – isn’t the same type of tragedy that has plagued the Kennedy family over time.
She was the wife of R. Sargent Shriver, the mother of Maria Shriver, and the sister of John F. Kennedy, Rosemary Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy. When Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away, she left behind Jean Kennedy Smith as the only remaining living Kennedy sibling.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the founder of the Special Olympics. Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics because of her developmentally challenged sister, Rosemary Kennedy. Rosemary Kennedy was institutionalized for most of her life. Rosemary Kennedy had a lobotomy at the age of 23, and died at the age of 86 in 2005.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver loved her sister very much, and she believed that disabled individuals could achieve much more than others gave them credit for. As the pioneer for the Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver will leave behind a legacy that will make the lives of so many individuals much richer.
The Special Olympics were very important to me, especially when I was younger. At home, my parents had a friend who adopted several developmentally delayed children. These children competed in the Special Olympics. Without Eunice Kennedy Shriver, these joyous events would not have been possible. The smiles and happiness experienced by so many would not be possible.
As Eunice Kennedy Shriver passes away, her legacy will live on. The Special Olympics will always be there for those who are developmentally delayed. People like her sister Rosemary Kennedy aren’t shut in institutions like they were in the past – perhaps that’s because of the values that Eunice Kennedy Shriver shared with the world. Special people ARE important. Special people ARE capable of achieving goals and living prosperous lives.
As the famous Kennedy family mourns the loss of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, people everywhere will remember the Kennedy family legacy. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Rosemary Kennedy, and the Special Olympics will always be remembered.
