Because people spend almost a third of their lives asleep, the bedroom is one of the most important rooms to consider when thinking about feng-shui. If you can imagine an invisible energy surrounding us, one of the aims of feng shui is to make sure that this ch’i, as it is called, flows well: not too fast and not too slowly.
Here are a few basic pointers regarding this:
There should be only one entrance to the room otherwise the ch’i is likely to flow quickly out a second door. If the bedroom opens onto a stairwell, try placing a large plant just inside the door. This is to stop an unwanted rush of ch’i coming into the room whenever the door is opened.
The same advice goes if your bed is directly opposite the entrance. A plant or screen between the doorway and the bed will help divert the flow of ch’i.
Where to Place Bedroom Furniture for Good Feng Shui
Try and place the head of your bed against a wall and if your bedroom has a sloping ceiling, the bed should be placed under the highest point. Headboards give a positive feeling of support but it’s not good to inset your bed into built-in cupboards and wardrobes. This is because the build up of Sha ch’i (negative energy) can drain your energy and cause depression.
The bed should not be placed near a window but if this can’t be avoided, you could always put up blinds or net curtains. Also, it’s not good feng shui to sleep with your head facing the door.
Furnishing Your Room to Create Good Feng Shui
The most important thing to remember is to avoid sharp edges and angles. These create “secret arrows” (negative rays of energy) which can disturb sleep. Rounded corners on furniture will help defect the flow of ch’i but if there are any sharp corners that can’t be avoided, be sure they don’t point towards the bed.
Mirrors reflecting the bed might also disturb your rest. In fact it is not good to have too many mirrors in a bedroom. If, therefore, you have mirrors on your wardrobe, try covering these with a lace or net material. Avoid hanging pictures and mirrors above the bed too. And if there are mirrors in the room, be sure to hang them where they can’t be seen from the bed.
Soft lighting creates a gentle flow of ch’i around the room and this is also soothing to the eye.
Finally, if you use an electric blanket, it is recommended that you warm the bed before getting into it, then turn it off. To sleep with an electric blanket turned on is bad feng shui.
With a few slight alterations and additions to your room, there is every chance you will find yourself sleeping more peacefully at night and enjoying pleasant dreams.
